Juniors Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) and Ryan Reuling (Groton, CT) racked up 11 and nine points, respectively to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse squad to a 21-11 victory over visiting Little East Conference foe Southern Maine on Senior Day at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. Those Colonials honored before the contest included Adriel Parra (Brewster, NY), Ryan Yursha (Brick, NJ) and Robert Swensen (Danbury, CT). Swensen also notched his 100th career point during the contest. The hosts outshot the visitors, 46-35, while also going a scorching 4-of-5 on man-up opportunities. The Colonials finished ahead in ground balls, 42-33, and faceoffs, 24-of-35. Yursha notched 16 of the wins at x for WestConn, while rookie Ryan Vogt (Ronkonkoma, NA) also picked up 10. Juniors Bryce Randall (Portland, ME) and Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, British Columbia) paced the Huskies with two goals and one assist each. The hosts broke the ice less than a minute into the game when Caldwell bounced a shot into the twine off a behind-the-cage feed from Reuling. Southern Maine would respond and seize a 3-2 advantage midway through the first quarter when senior midfielder Jake Schoenberg (Topsham, ME) tallied his seventh goal of the year. However, WestConn retaliated with the next 12 scoring strikes to put the affair out of reach. Reuling ignited the flurry off a pretty pass from classmate Timothy Yanucci (Coram, NY) before junior middie Christian Sparacino (Manorville, NY) put the finishing touches on the run, assisted by Caldwell, to move ahead 14-3. Reuling would finish with six goals and three assists, while Caldwell wrapped up the afternoon with four goals and seven helpers. With the Colonials ahead 20-4, the Huskies would not give up as they reeled off seven of the game's final eight goals. Sophomore netminder Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, NY) earned the win for the Colonials, upping his record to 7-5, while sophomore goalie Griffin Hanson (Dover, NH) dropped to 3-5 for the Huskies. WestConn, now 7-5 overall and 2-1 in league play, returns to action at conference nemesis Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Southern Maine, now 3-6 and 0-3, heads to Maine Maritime on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
