The Castleton University men's lacrosse team dropped a Little East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium, falling to Western Connecticut by a final score of 21-3. The Spartans fall to 4-9 with the loss including a 2-4 mark in LEC play, while WestConn improves to 9-5 overall and 4-1 against LEC opponents. The Colonials controlled the game from the second quarter forward, holding a 50-29 edge in shots while winning 16-of-28 face-offs. Castleton held a 42-37 edge in ground balls, but turned it over 27 times to WestConn's 25. The Colonials were 1-of-5 on man-up chances and 18-of-25 clearing the ball, while Castleton went 0-for-3 on man-up opportunities and 12-of-23 clearing. Wyatt Pickrell scored twice for the Spartans, netting his first multi-goal game of the season. Tom Pardew notched his 10th goal of the year with a second-half score, and Luc Issa led the team with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Cameron Russell collected five ground balls, and Andrew McCarthy added three caused turnovers in addition to his three ground balls. Brandon Myron made six saves in the first half in the loss, while Maxx Ingison stopped three shots in 21 minutes before Alex Rousseau made one save in nine mintues of play. Robert Swenson and Eric Caldwell scored five times each for the high-powered WestConn offense, while Matthew Chibbaro, Donald Schaumloffel and Ryan Reuling added multi-goal games. Ryan Yursha collected six ground balls on the day, with Zak Santoemma and Jesse Weaver adding four apiece. Perry Cassidy stopped 14 shots in 45 minutes of action to earn the win before giving way to Derek Strine in the fourth quarter. The game opened as a defensive battle, as the score sat at 2-1 in favor of the Colonials after one quarter of play. Caldwell opened the scoring midway through the frame, before Pickrell tied it for the Spartans with five minutes to play in the quarter. Timothy Yannucci then finished a pass from Caldwell to give the Colonials a 2-1 lead. WestConn scored the first eight goals of the second quarter, jumping out to a 10-1 lead after a nine-goal run, but Pickrell got the Spartans on the board again with 5:16 to play until halftime. The Colonials added two more goals before the break, as Schaumloffel and Swensen gave the visitors a 12-2 edge at halftime. The second half was all WestConn, as it built its lead to 17-2 with five unanswered goals in the quarter before adding four more in the final frame. Pardew's goal with 12:04 to play snapped an 8-0 run for Western Connecticut, but it was not enough as the Colonials cruised to the 21-3 win. The Spartans return to acton on Wednesday at Norwich University. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
