BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored four goals and assisted on three others while freshman Nick Gore (Salem, N.H.) had six points on four goals and two assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team picked up a 16-14 win over Emerson in the Leopards' home opener of the 2019 campaign. With the win the leopards improve to 2-0 while the Lions fall to 0-1 in their season-opening contest. Gore and Doner scored 1:23 apart to give Wentworth a 2-0 lead with 9:38 left in the first quarter before Emerson freshman Skyler Celotto (Fairfield, Conn.) put the Lions on the board with 6:57 left. Gore, Doner, and freshman Erik Madden (Wolfeboro, N.H.) each scored to give the hosts a 5-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. Senior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) and sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) extended the run, giving Wentworth a 7-1 lead with 9:49 left in the half before Celotto and freshman Hunter Gervais (Johnston, R.I.) scored nine seconds apart to make it 7-3 with 8:15 remaining. Doner and Gore got the Black & Gold back on the scoreboard as the duo tallied goals 1:03 apart to extend the lead to 9-3 at the half. Doner's goal ignited an 8-0 run for Wentworth, which built its lead to 15-3 with 9:02 left in the game. Five different players scored goals in the third quarter, a quarter which saw the Leopards outscore the Lions 5-0. Emerson sophomore Tim Doyle (San Diego, Calif.) the run when he scored with 6:32 left. That goal ended a Leopard shutout run of 31:43. Sophomore Andrew DiPalma (West Orange, N.J.) picked up a goal with 1:25 left to round out the scoring. In addition to Doner and Gore, DiPalma had three goals, Coakley found the back of the net twice, and senior Jason Buck (Manlius, N.Y.) finished with a goal and an assist. Senor Nick Arcario (Norwalk, Conn.) and junior Jake Berry (Beverly, Mass.) scooped up four ground balls each while freshman Anthony Raei (Boston, Mass.) had three caused turnovers. Celotto finished with a pair of goals while freshman Alex Hrisanthopoulos (Carlsbad, Calif.), who was 12-of-17 at the X, scooped up nine ground balls and also had an assist. Sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.Y.) made a career high 18 saves in the win. Sophomore Calloway Myers (Chico, Calif.) made nine saves in the first half while freshman Malcolm McGrath (Ridgefield, Conn.) made nine second-half saves. Wentworth had advantages in shots (41-34) and ground balls (41-32). Wentworth is at Oneonta on Saturday.
