The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team held off a late fourth period flurry today to secure an 11-10 victory against Wentworth Institute in its 2019 home opener. The Red Dragons are now 2-0 to start the season while the Leopards fall to 2-1. The Inside Story Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the opening period of play. Four different Red Dragons scored including Dean Cannon (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), Ryan MacDevitt (Sayville/Sayville), Thomas McRae (Northport/Northport) and Jake Boston (Highland Mills/Monroe Woodbury). The two squads combined for seven goals in the second period with Oneonta grabbing an 8-3 lead at halftime. McDevitt and McRae each tallied their second goals of the game while Ben Coakley led the Leopards with a pair of man-up goals. The two teams came out even, 2-2, in the third period with four different players scoring. The Leopards had the better of the play in the final period outscoring the Red Dragons 5-1. Wentworth made the final score closer than it may have been with three goals in the final 12 seconds of play including its final goal as the buzzer sounded to end the game. Just the Stats McRae, MacDevitt and Thomas Moore (Rockville Centre/South Side) all scored two goals each in the contest for Oneonta. McRae also added one helper to lead the squad with three points. Coakley led Wentworth with five points on four goals and one assist. Jacob Eldred, Kyle Doner and Jason Buck each tallied twice for the Leopards. Doner and Eldred also added a pair of assists each. Wentworth outshot Oneonta 48-40 with the Leopards holding a slight edge of shots on goal 25-24. The Leopards won 16-of-24 faceoffs and were successful on 19-of-20 clear attempts. Oneonta was successful on 21-of-27 clears and collected 24 ground balls. Zach Flynn made 15 saves in goal for Oneonta while Randy Ryan recorded 13 saves for Wentworth. What's Next The Red Dragons will travel to Saratoga Springs on Tuesday to face Skidmore College beginning at 4pm.
