At the 4:02 mark of the third period, Ian Flynn scored his first collegiate goal to knot the score at 8-8 between John Carroll and host Oberlin. But what happened between the 2:05 mark and the 1:06 mark proved to be the difference maker. Oberlin rattled off four unanswered goals, fueled by three consecutive faceoff wins, in a 59-second span to break away from the Blue Streaks in what ultimately became a 13-11 win Thuesday evening at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex in Oberlin, Ohio. The Yeomen scored their 13th and final goal at the 12:59 mark of the fourth period, and then held off a JCU rally that pulled the Blue Streaks to within two goals. But Skyler Blake's goal at the 5:20 mark would be the last tally by either side. JCU had chased Oberlin all day. Trailing 2-0 and 4-1 early on before tying the score at 5-54 near the end of the second quarter. But Oberlin scored the final goal of the hald to take a 6-5 lead at intermission. The Yeomen built their lead back to three goals at 8-5 before JCU stormed back again, tying the match on Flynn's goal. Blake led the Blue Streaks with five goals, while Flynn and Kevin Hack each scored twice and Bennett Gorman and Cole Jaskiewicz (his first as a Blue Streak) scored once. Brendan Whitty had two assists. Defensively, Nick Pompelia had three ground balls while Blake, Aidan Hubbell and Clayton Karam had two caused turnovers apiece. Jacob Betz had 17 saves as Oberlin outshot John Carroll, 49-38. The Yeomen also won the faceoff battle decisively, 18-9. Oberlin improves to 2-0 with the win while the Blue Streaks drop to 2-1, and will face Illinois Wesleyan at home on Sunday, March 10, at 2:00 p.m.
