The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team snapped a two-game skid with a commanding 13-6 victory over the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders Saturday afternoon. The Yeomen overcame six minutes of penalty time as they were whistled for 10 infractions in the contest. The Oberlin man-up unit stepped up to the challenge as they held the Purple Raiders to just two goals in the six minutes and netted a short handed goal of their own. The defensive effort was led by junior defender Max Scott who caused six Mount Union turnovers, picked up five ground balls and dished out an assist. On the other side of the field it was freshman Michael Muldoon who led the team with his first career hat trick and an assist for a season-high points. Seven other Yeomen touched twine for the Yeomen with Matthew Barry, Thomas Berle Carman and Griffin Cappelletti each netting two a piece. Despite Mount Union opening the scoring, the Yeomen answered with a pair of their own within two minutes. Berle Carman beat the goalie short sided off a centering pass by Muldoon, with the Muldoon scoring the next unassisted from x, giving the Yeomen a 2-1 lead with 10:23 left in the first. After two Purple Raider goals in the eighth minute, the Yeomen scored six of the final seven goals of the half to take an 8-4 lead into the locker room at halftime. Long stick midfielder Dan Nerenhausen started the run for Oberlin with 7:10 left in the first, with Berle Carman closing out the first half scoring with 1:34 on the clock. The Yeomen 10-man ride, was in full effect in the first half as Mount Union was only successful on five of its 11 clears in the first half. In a defensive third period, Mount Union cut the Yeomen lead down to 8-5 when Purpler Raider attack man Logan Addonizio scored off a feed by Zach Trimper. Oberlin would answer right before the period horn when Tom Decker fed Barry on top of the crease to put Oberlin back in front. Both teams scored early in the final 15 minutes of play, but a 3-0 run with less than five minutes remaining sealed the victory for the Crimson and Gold. Jake Parentis beat the keeper in transition off a pass from Decker, and Cappelletti would put the final touches on the victory off feeds from Scott and Decker. Junior Calvin Filson settled in for the Yeomen in goal, finishing the day with a season-high tying 14 saves, highlighted by a six save second quarter. The Yeomen outshot the Purple Raiders 44-34, putting 28 of their shots on target and won the battle for ground balls 37-30. Mount Union would win the face-off battle winning 18-of-22, with 17 won by sophomore Chris Motter. With the victory the Yeomen improve to 2-1 on Bailey Field and 3-2 on the year, while the Purple Raiders fell to 2-4 on the season. The Yeomen got back on track at the right time as they open North Coast Athletic Conference play next Saturday at Wittenberg University. The opening face-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
