Cleveland, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team didn't have enough firepower to stay with John Carroll University, falling 19-6 on Saturday night in the opening round of the Sixth City Showdown on the campus of Cleveland State University. The Yeomen hung with the Blue Streaks in the opening quarter, but JCU broke the contest open in the second quarter – outscoring the Yeomen 6-0 in the frame to take an 11-2 lead into the intermission. John Carroll netted the game's first goal, but the Yeomen would get back to even as Reese Koburov cashed in Oberlin's initial score of the season to open up his 2017 account. Later in the quarter, rookie Lucas Mendicino would send in his first collegiate goal with the help of an Eric Hager assist to make it 3-2 JCU. However, the Blue Streaks would respond with 10 straight scores to open up a 13-2 lead in the third quarter. Steve Kelleher would ultimately stop the run with the help of a Zach Lipkin feed, but the eventual outcome was never in doubt. Hager would close the third with the 43rd goal of his career as the Yeomen went into the fourth quarter down 16-4. In the fourth quarter, Kelleher - with an assist from Jay Messina - and Ian McCague each found the back of the net to cap the scoring for the Yeomen. The Blue Streaks out-shot the Yeomen 40-18, which included a 28-13 margin in shots on goal. JCU also won the ground ball battle 38-27. Senior captain Kinori Rosnow won 17-of-28 face-offs and led the Yeomen with six ground ball pick-ups. In his first collegiate start in goal, freshman Calvin Filson made nine saves.
