NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Dominant on both sides of the ball, the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team suffocated No. 12 Roanoke during an epic top-20 showdown as CNU ran away with a 17-3 victory on a soggy Wednesday evening at Captains Field. Pulling out to an 8-0 lead, the attack never lost its footing. Lucas Barry and Dylan Rice both contributed five points apiece, while Brady Altobello added a hat-trick as well. Meanwhile, Miles Collins starred in transition while chipping in with two goals and a pair of assists. Overall, 12 different Captains tallied at least one point during the victory. On the other side of the field, the Captains were equally effective. Tormenting the Maroons for 60 minutes, CNU forced 28 turnovers, which established a new single-game program record. Phoenix Hines caused seven of his own, marking the second-most by an individual player in CNU history. Drew Cornell also added five caused turnovers and six ground balls, while Max Wayne forced four miscues as well. Between the pipes, Scott McAneney was a wall. Going head-to-head against the reigning USILA National Goalkeeper of the Year, the junior made an impressive statement. Standing tall against the high-powered Roanoke attack, McAneney made 18 saves, which equaled the fifth-highest single-game total in program history. He also grabbed four ground balls to round out his evening. With the win, Christopher Newport improves to 3-1 on the season. The setback drops Roanoke to 1-1. From the very beginning, CNU set the tone. After the Captains blocked an initial shot by the Maroons, Will Cogan pounced on the loose ball and set up a quick transition going the other way. Killing the defense with their speed, Campbell Pozin fed to Collins, who buried one on the interior less than a minute into the contest. Continuing to show off their passing skills, Jordan Lee found Altobello curling along the left post for the squad's second goal before Pozin dished over the crease to Lucas Barry, who hammered one home in the eighth minute. Already holding a 3-0 lead, the Captains made sure to keep the Maroons off the board. McAneney swallowed a pair of shots by the visitors, while Wayne caused a turnover during a man-down situation. Later, Will Stockhausen cut off another rally during a tremendous five-minute defensive stand. Looking to put the perfect punctuation mark on the opening period, Rice flipped back to Griffin Hanes, who unloaded from long-range to snatch a 4-0 lead entering the second quarter. Keeping the momentum with a fresh 15 minutes on the clock, Aidan FitzGerald won the initial faceoff, while Collins slipped in behind the scrum and grabbed the roller. With a clear field ahead of him, the sophomore burned a path straight towards the cage before blistering the back of the net for his second strike of the contest. Refusing to let up, Stockhausen set up back-to-back strikes by Altobello and Barry before Rice unleashed a dagger from deep to grab an 8-0 lead midway through the second stanza. Although Roanoke managed to light up the scoreboard for the first time to inch back within seven, Christopher Newport punctuated the first half with two straight lasers from Pozin and Altobello. With plenty of cushion, the Captains turned to their defense to keep the Maroons in check. Early in the second half, Hines was a beast. The sophomore long pole stripped three visitors, including a trail check after the initial faceoff. Meanwhile, McAneney continued to put on a clinic in the crease with five more saves in the period. While the defense was doing its job, the offense never lost its rhythm. Barry came through with two goals during the third quarter, while Thomas Mark dunked over top of the defense following a nice feed by Hanes. Later, with time winding down, Wayne forced a turnover with seven seconds remaining. Refusing to run out the clock, Cornell grabbed the ball and quickly created a fast-break situation. Flashing their wheels, Barry eventually took possession and connected with Rice, who found an opening with 1.7 seconds left on the clock. Fostering a 14-1 lead entering the final 15 minutes, the Captains never slowed down. Fighting until the end, Glenn Doering sacrificed his body while blasting an RC midfielder during a loose ball situation to keep possession early in the stanza. McAneney also came through with his final save of the contest early in the quarter before exiting with just over eight minutes remaining. Ending the game in style, Rice and Jackson Deal pushed the lead to 16-1 before FitzGerald capped off the festivities. After Roanoke managed to tack a few late goals on the board, CNU's long-pole faceoff man came back with the final highlight. After Roanoke's last goal, the Maroons managed to win the faceoff, but FitzGerald stuck with the play. Ripping the ball away with a check from behind, he gained possession and gave the ball back to the offense. Rewarding those defensive efforts, Alex Horgan eventually tossed the ball back to FitzGerald, who went high-to-low with a gorgeous shot to seal the 17-3 victory. Overall, Christopher Newport out-shot Roanoke, 63-44, and held a 46-35 advantage in ground balls. Although the Maroons managed to win 17 of the game's 24 faceoffs, McAneney and his back line constantly erased those extra possessions with stellar defensive efforts. CNU will return to action on Saturday when the Captains travel to Baltimore for a neutral-site tilt with Ursinus beginning at 2 p.m.
