Dylan Rice established a new program record after scoring a goal in his 18th straight appearance, but the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end as CNU dropped a 14-9 decision to No. 12 Stevens on a waterlogged Thursday evening at Captains Turf Field. Continuing his offensive assault, Rice posted his seventh consecutive hat-trick while breaking the program record for consecutive games with a goal. Fittingly, he established the new standard with the previous record-holder in attendance as former legend Will Geise, who now serves as a broadcaster for the Captains, set the old mark of 17 straight games with a tally from February 15 through April 22, 2017. Along with Rice's historic efforts, Will Stockhausen notched four points, including three goals, while Lucas Barry also scored twice. Meanwhile, on the other side, Max Wayne and Phoenix Hines both forced four turnovers, and Will Cogan added two. Between the pipes, Scott McAneney came through with 14 saves for CNU. With the setback, Christopher Newport falls to 7-3 on the season. The victory bumps Stevens to 6-2. Both squads flashed their firepower early as the teams split the game's first four goals. Stockhausen and Rice capitalized on a pair of early Stevens penalties with a pair of man-up tallies, while freshmen Alex Horgan and Brady Altobello played supporting roles on the two daggers. Unfortunately, Stevens caught fire after that point. The visitors posted the final two strikes in the first quarter before opening the second period with three straight goals to snatch a 7-2 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. Looking to stymie Stevens' surge, Christopher Newport whistled for a timeout. Following the break, Jackson Deal forced a turnover before the Captains took advantage on the other side. With Stockhausen drawing a double-team on the far side of the field, he quickly tossed a pass in deep to Barry, who cut the deficit down to four at 7-3. Sadly, the goal did little to change the momentum. Although Rice came through with his second rocket while brushing off a huge hit at the top of the zone, Stevens scored three of the final four goals of the first half to steal a 10-4 edge entering the break. After halftime, Stevens kept motoring along with the first two goals in the third period, but Christopher Newport refused to go down quietly. Leading the comeback bid, Stockhausen scored back-to-back goals, including an absolute screamer from the far side off a toss from Altobello. Later, after Hines bullied a midfielder and forced a turnover with two minutes left in the stanza, Deal landed a quick laser off a feed from Jacob Hale to cut the Ducks' lead down to five at 12-7. Needing to attack quickly in the fourth quarter, the Captains got a breakaway goal with 10 minutes remaining. After McAneney jumped on a roller just before it trickled across the goal line, he fired a pinpoint pass to Miles Collins, who was settled near midfield. Cruising up the turf, the second-year star quickly dished to Barry, who sniped from the far side to pull the hosts back within four. Unforunately, as they would all day, the Ducks retaliated. Following a timeout, Stevens scored back-to-back goals in less than 30 seconds to steal a commanding 14-8 advantage. Although Rice punctuated his historic evening with one final highlight, Christopher Newport simply ran out of time. During the game, Stevens held a 48-29 advantage in shots and a 32-29 lead in ground balls. The visitors also won 17 of the game's 26 faceoffs. Christopher Newport will look to bounce back on Saturday when the squad caps off its homestand with a 1 p.m. tilt against Southern Virginia.
