MEDFORD - In a game featuring a combined 40 goals and 20 penalties, the third-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team opened a new home season at Bello Field with a 24-16 victory against Keene State College on Wednesday afternoon. Henry Hollen had 24 face-off wins for the Jumbos Fifteen different Jumbos scored goals as Tufts improved to 2-0. Senior Michael Mattson and sophomore John Cordrey both tallied three times, with Cordrey adding two assists for a five-point game. Senior Austin Carbone finished with two goals and two assists. The 24 goals scored is tied for sixth-most in team history. Keene, which dropped to 1-2 on the season, was led by a game-high five goals from senior Rob Hart. Tufts shook off a Keene team that led 4-3 at the end of the first period and 7-4 five minutes into the second frame. Senior Bryan Rotatori and classmate Tyler Reilly both scored two goals as the Owls built that three-goal margin. The Jumbos turned the game in their favor by scoring seven of the final eight goals in the last nine minutes of the second half. Six different players scored during the Jumbo run with Mattson netting two, helping the hosts take an 11-8 lead into halftime. After 19 total goals were scored in the first half, the offenses slowed down a bit in the third with each team scoring twice. Cordrey had a goal and an assist in the third for Tufts while junior Hunter Arnold set up a pair of Keene goals. Heading into the fourth, the Owls were still in the game down 13-10. The Jumbos blew it open with a remarkable 11-goal fourth period. Keene added six as 17 were scored in all during the final 15 minutes. The Jumbos had four of the first five to take a 17-11 margin when senior co-captain and defenseman Tyler Olney scored at 8:27 of the fourth. Keene's Frank Bacarella answered at 8:13 before another four-out-of-five goals stretch by the hosts put their lead at 21-13 when junoir Griffin Johnson scored with 3:37 remaining. Six goals were scored in the final 103 seconds to put an end to it. Jumbo sophomore Henry Hollen took 34 face-offs in the game and won 23 (.676). The Jumbos used three goalies, with sophomore Ben Shmerler starting and making 10 saves in the opening 30 minutes to get the win. Senior Tucker Mathers caused three turnovers to lead Tufts, while both junior Connor Lansdale and sophoore Arend Broekmate picked up three groundballs on defense. Rotatori finished with six poitns (three goals, three assists) for the Owls, while Bacarella added three goals and an assist. Arnold had five assists to go with a goal for six points. Sophomore JJ Downey caused two turnovers and collected five groundballs. Junior goalie Mat Howe made 14 saves.
