SUNY Cortland (6-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (2-5, 0-1) 22-3 in the teams' SUNYAC opener this afternoon. Junior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) scored two man-up goals and senior attackman Sean Coe (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) added another. The Red Dragons seized control of the contest with an 11-1 opening quarter. Huiatt got the Bears on the board at 8:45 with an assist from senior midfielder Josh Bradford (Whitney Point, N.Y./Lycoming College). Just 30 seconds later, Huiatt set up Coe to close the gap to 4-2. The Red Dragons pulled away after the goal. Huiatt notched his second with 6:22 left in the second half with a helper from senior midfielder Gabe Carbone (Accord, N.Y./Rondout Valley). Joey Panriello (4g, 2a) and Dante Yacavone (3g, 3a) each led Cortland with six points. Dean Riley had five points on three goals and two assists. Terrance Haggerty (3g, 1a) and Jonathan Ecker (1g, 3a) contributed four points apiece. Senior captain Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was tagged with the loss after allowing 12 goals and making four saves in the first 16:59. Sophomore Mike Nowak (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) allowed eight goals and made six saves in the next 28:01 Freshman Jack Corcoran (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) closed out the game with two saves and two goals allowed in the fourth quarter. Jon Vargas picked up the win for the Red Dragons with six saves and three goals allowed in the first three quarters. Marc Esposito finished the game with one save in the final 15 minutes. The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they head down Route 11 to take on SUNY Canton at 7 p.m.
