THE BASICS Score: Emerson 15, Dean 5 Records: Emerson Lions (1-7) ; Dean Bulldogs (3-3) Location: Boston, Mass. (Rotch Field) Date: Saturday, March 23, 2019 The Lead: Freshman Hunter Gervais (Johnston, R.I) powered out four goals followed by three goals apiece from both junior Austin Franklin (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Jared Brush (Detroit, Mich.) in the Emerson men's lacrosse team's 15-5 win over Dean on Saturday afternoon. Brush's three goals pushed him to a career total of 72, making him the Lions' new all- time leading goal scorer. INSIDE THE NUMBERS Gervais paced all scorers with four goals along with one assists on 11 total shots, while Franklin netted three goals and dished out three assists and Brush put in a trio of goals with one assist. Also scoring for Emerson were sophomore Tim Doyle (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Skyler Celotto (Westport, Conn.), who each scored two goals apiece and had one goal from sophomore Chandler Day (Barre, Vt.) and freshman Peirce Eldredge (Media, Penn.) dished out five assists. Junior Austin DiPietro (Clermont, Fla.) scooped up a game-high 15 ground balls and won 22-of-24 in the face-off X. Picking up his first collegiate win was freshman net minder Malcolm McGrath (Ridgefield, Conn.) and came away with nine stops on 14 shots while he allowed five goals. For Dean, Anthony Trasacco tallied two goals of the Bulldogs' five goals as Brody Fredericks, Louis Piccolo and Tyler Minor scored the remaining three goals. Joe White scooped a team-high five ground balls and won two face-offs and Alex Govoni shouldered the loss for Dean as he surrendered 15 goals with 16 stops on 31 total shots. Emerson held the heavy advantage in shots (53-19), ground balls (30-8) and within the face-off circle (22-2), while going 1-for-5 on the man-up alongside 21-of-22 successful clears. Dean finished 0-for-4 when on the man-up and had 17-of-20 good clears. HOW IT HAPPENED Goals from Minor and Trasacco quickly put Dean up 2-0 with 11:14 to go in the opening frame before Gervais tallied the first of his four goals at 6:50 to bring Emerson within one (2-1). Doyle followed up with the equalizer at 5:12 with the score now at 2-all before Fredericks put in the g-ahead net at the 48 second mark of the quarter to lift the Bulldogs to a 3-2 lead. The second quarter belonged to Emerson as the Lions found the back of the net three times, starting 51 seconds in when Franklin fired in a pass from Celotto to knot the game again at 3-3. About eight minutes after tying the game at three, Gervais and Brush spread two goals through the 5:19 to 1:09 mark and bumped Emerson back in front at 5-3 before Trasacco slipped the Bulldogs' fourth goal in (5-4) with 38 seconds left to wrap the first half. Emerson mixed in another three goals within the third quarter to gain a three-goal lead over Dean. The Lions got their first of three goals after capitalizing on an unnecessary roughness penalty committed by the Bulldogs and saw Celotto fire in the sixth Lions' goal at 12:04 (6-4). An unassisted net by Piccolo at 9:57 pulled Dean back within one at 6-5, but it was the last time the Bulldogs would register a goal on Emerson as Gervais and Doyle answered with another pair and the Lions up 8-5. A seven-goal fourth frame was pieced together by Brush and Franklin each slipping two goals past Govoni with the help of three more goals from Gervais, Celotto and Day to cruise to the 15-5 win. UP NEXT Emerson wraps its home stand on Wednesday, March 27 in a 6:00 p.m. contest with Mass. - Dartmouth.
