Norton, Mass. – Nick Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) doled out six assists as part of a seven point afternoon and the elusive senior attackman became the all-time leading scorer in Clark University lacrosse history as the Cougars topped New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wheaton College, 13-10, on Sunday afternoon. Johnson, who worked his way into the No. 2 spot on the school's scoring list after his three assist performance in the 11-6 win over Plymouth State on Wednesday, now has 185 points (83 goals, 102 assists) – one more than Shawn Roche (2006-10). Game Information Score: Clark University 13, Wheaton College 10 Records: Clark University (7-3, 1-0 NEWMAC); Wheaton College (3-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) Location: Nordin Field, Norton, Mass. How It Happened: The Clark offense got rolling early as Will Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) scored one of his four goals in the first three minutes of the game. That lead doubled when Owen Lamerson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) connected with Jack Pierce (Westboro, Mass.) two minutes later. Wheaton answered back, tying the score with markers from Scott Whear and C.J. Leighton but the Scarlet and White got Mandracchia's second of the period – this time with help from Johnson to go in front, 3-2. A man-up goal from Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) on Johnson's second helper of the afternoon added to the Cougar advantage but once again, the Lyons scored consecutive goals, these ones coming off of the sticks of Matt Morgan and Zach Brode, and knotted the score at 4-4 midway through the second stanza. From that point on, however, it was all Clark as the Cougars went on to score the final six goals of the period. First, Johnson connected with Andrew Myhre (Middlebury, Vt.) and then two man-up goals from King less than a minute apart gave the Scarlet and White a 7-4 edge. That lead continued to grow as Johnson set up King again and then Mandracchia closed the quarter with a pair of goals – the final one coming with nine seconds left in the half off of a Johnson assist. Ahead 10-4 to start the third, Wheaton scored three straight goals before Johnson found the back of the net late in the quarter. Another Lyon strike as the period wore down made things interesting heading into the fourth with the Cougars clinging to an 11-8 advantage. It took less than three minutes into the fourth quarter for Johnson to find Quincy Milton III (Seattle, Wash.) for the record-breaking point which turned out to be his 102nd career assist. Now with the score 12-8, Leighton and Pierce traded goals before Leighton scored again in the final ten seconds to account for the final score.
