GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Capital University men's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season while on the road playing against DePauw University. The Crusaders, led by four-goal performances by CJ Hughes and Barrett Naugle, downed the Tigers, 14-9, at Reavis Stadium in Greencastle, Indiana. The Crusaders broke out on the offensive side of the ball the way it predicted during the preseason. Leading the charge were midfielder Barrett Naugle (Champion, Pa./Greensburg Central) and attacker CJ Hughes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills). Each posted four goals and one assist to total 10 points between the pair. Naugle got the party started just 43 seconds into the game when he charged down the field and scored an unassisted goal which sparked a three-goal run for the Crusaders. Senior Ryan Rampi (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and freshman Jack Scharner (Maineville, Ohio/King's) followed with goals after Naugle. DePauw scored once, which then prompted a two-for-one special when the Crusaders retaliated. Hughes struck first and then Naugle compliment to drive the score to 5-1 with 5:22 remaining in the first. Up by three goals to start the second quarter, Hughes and the Crusaders benefited from a DePauw penalty. The junior scored while Cap was on the man-up to push the advantage to four goals. DePauw scored twice in succession to bring the deficit to two, but that only sparked the next CU run on goals. All four goals were scored inside the last 6:08, which began with Naugle's second goal of the game. Cap took a 10-4 lead into the half and then DePauw responded to make a game of it once again. Four consecutive tallies by the hosts drew them back to within two goals, and all were scored inside a three-minute span. Freshman Zach Heflin scored Cap's lone goal in the third to make the score 11-8 heading into the final frame. In this game of runs, Cap continued to score at will. Heflin's goal began a run of four straight, two of which came off the twig of sophomore Talbott Gottwals (Columbia, Md./Atholon). With Gottwals' lamplighters, the game was in control for Cap the rest of the way. They held the Tigers to just one goal and four shot attempts through the entire fourth quarter. Cap's special teams came to play, holding the Tigers scoreless on five man-up chances. Senior goalie TJ Johnson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) earned his first collegiate victory after making 11 saves on 20 chances. Cap will play a second road contest on Saturday, March 2, at Alma College (Mich.). The Crusaders and Scots will meet up for a 1 p.m. faceoff at Bahlke Field. Facebook
