POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-2, 2-1 SUNYAC) shook off a fast start from Plattsburgh State (1-4, 1-2) to defeat the Cardinals 13-6. The win was the Bears' first over Plattsburgh since 2014 and evens the all-time series at 12-12.
Junior attackman Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) led the way again with a career-high five goals. Senior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had three goals and an assist to give him 140 points (87g, 53a) for his career. Sophomore midfielder Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) registered a goal and two assists and junior midfielder Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) added two goals. Sophomore goalie Ben Fuchs (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Calvary Christian Academy) stopped 11 shots for his sixth career win.
Cardinals sophomore attackman Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) opened the scoring with a goal at 12:41. Potsdam responded with a goal from junior midfielder Alex Burley (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) 32 seconds later. Senior midfielder Stephen Kane (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) made it 2-1 at 9:11 for Plattsburgh's last lead of the contest. The Bears scored the next four in-a-row and never gave up control. Walsh struck at 6:20 and junior long-stick midfielder Bryley Frederick (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands) put Potsdam up for good seven seconds later. Huiatt then set up Talcott at 5:18 for the Bears' third marker in 1:02.
Swift closed the gap to 5-3 at 9:53 of the second quarter, but Huiatt and Miller responded at 8:57 and 6:02 to make it 7-3. Sophomore midfielder Amos Grimm (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) netted Plattsburgh's fourth goal at 2:43, but Talcott finished a feed from junior assistant captain Henry Reber (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) 50 seconds later to send Potsdam into the half up 8-4.
The Bears erased any thoughts of a Cardinals' comeback in the second half, outscoring them 5-2 the rest of the way. Huiatt got his second goal at 14:04 and Talcott buried the next two in succession at 11:15 and 7:35 with assists from Walsh and Reber, respectively. Plattsburgh sophomore attack Gus Rugg (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) got the final goal of the third quarter, but Potsdam led 11-5 after 45 minutes.
Huiatt scored his third at 13:04 of the fourth quarter and Walsh set up Talcott's fifth at 7:37. Cardinals attackman Connor Wolff (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) wrapped up the scoring with a final goal with 33 seconds on the clock.
Fuchs allowed five goals in the first 54:01 and freshman Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool allowed one in the last 5:59.
Junior faceoff specialist Brandon Smith (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) had his best performance yet, winning 18 of his 23 chances.
The Bears are back in action when they head to Utica College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. nonconference contest with the Pioneers. Potsdam leads the all-time series 7-4 dating back to 2004.
