ANDERSON, S.C. – Holding on to a narrow 13-11 lead going in the final period, the nationally 19th-ranked Limestone University men's lacrosse team posted a fourth-quarter shutout on defense while scoring just enough to secure a 16-11 rebound win over first-year Anderson University on Wednesday, March 31. GAME INFORMATION Score: No. 19 Limestone 16, Anderson (S.C.) 11 Records: No. 19 Limestone (6-3, 5-3), Anderson (S.C.) (4-6, 2-5) Location: Trojan Stadium INSIDE THE BOXSCORE Graduate Jordan Stouros (Ottawa, Ontario) forced six turnovers and collected 12 groundballs Stouros added a goal for the Saints and helped the defense blank Anderson in the final period Junior attack Owen Consoletti (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) buried a team-high four goals Junior midfielder Connor Grauer (Riverhead, N.Y.) finished with a hat trick Freshman Chris Erneston IV (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) tallied a goal and two assists Sophomore attack Jason Madden (Walnut Creek, Calif.) dished out three assists Freshman attack Frank Smith (Bayville, N.Y.) chipped in a pair of goals Freshman attack Jackson Braswell (Greenville, S.C.) scored twice Senior Christopher Parrott (Havre de Grace, Md.) went 12-of-17 at the "X" with two groundballs Junior keeper Shawn Howell (Mattituck, N.Y.) finished with seven saves Limestone outshot the Trojans, 39-32, and recorded a 32-21 edge in groundballs HOW IT HAPPENED First Quarter Perhaps playing a little angry following Sunday's loss, the Saints stormed out of the gates with a four-goal outburst over the first five minutes. Braswell tallied back-to-back goals during that stretch, one of those assisted in transition by junior defender Steve Werner (Dallastown, Pa.) to put Limestone in front early. Grauer and freshman Jason Thomfohrde (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) both split the cage during that early run, but Anderson stayed close with two of the next three goals to cut into the lead. Freshman Davis Weakley (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored with 77 ticks left, however, to put the Saints on top, 6-3, at the end of the first. Second Quarter Limestone extended the margin to 7-3 a few minutes into the second as Consoletti finished off a feed from Erneston, but the Trojans answered to stay within striking distance. Stouros would then turn defense into offense, forcing a turnover before scoring on a breakaway to start a 3-1 run for the Saints. Smith followed with his first tally before freshman Tim Ladner (Sandwich, Mass.) doubled up the Trojans, 10-5. AU did not seem fazed trailing the five-time national champs by five as it closed the half with three straight goals. The Trojans tallied all three of those in less than a minute to pull within 10-8 at the break. Third Quarter The Trojans extended the scoring run to 4-0 with a goal just 68 seconds into the period, closing the gap to 10-9, but Consoletti answered for the Saints on the ensuring faceoff to start a 3-1 counterattack. He then added a second consecutive score before Smith capped the spurt to make it a 13-10 game for Limestone. However, Anderson would not go away quietly, continuing to hang around, 13-11, through three quarters. Fourth Quarter The Blue and Gold created separation early in the fourth as Erneston split the cage 21 seconds into the final period before he assisted on Grauer's hat trick a few moments later, putting the Saints on top, 15-11. Limestone's defense took it from there as sophomore Tyler Wright (Port Republic, Md.), Erneston, and Stouros all ended Anderson possessions with forced turnovers while Howell came up with a pair of saves. After the defensive unit successfully fended off an extra-man opportunity by the Trojans, Consoletti applied the final touches on the other end as he scored off an assist from Madden to seal the 16-11 win. TURNING POINT Although the Trojans never led in the contest, they continued to stay close with the Blue and Gold through three quarters. A 4-0 run allowed Anderson to pull to within a goal in the third, but the Limestone defense came up big in the fourth period as it kept the home team off the board over the final 15 minutes of play. NOTABLES The Saints improve to 6-0 this season when scoring 10 or more goals in a game It was the first ever meeting between Limestone and a brand-new Anderson program After being held scoreless on Sunday, Concoletti erupted for four goals Wednesday afternoon Grauer tallied his first career hat trick Stouros also set career highs on Wednesday with 6 caused turnovers and 12 groundballs Limestone forced 16 Anderson turnovers while the Saints committed a season-low 10 turnovers UP NEXT The Saints will get a week off before returning home to host rival Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday, April 7 at 8 p.m. in South Atlantic Conference action.
