Junior Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. scored four goals and an assist to lead the Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over visiting Greensboro College Saturday afternoon from Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-1 overall while the Pride fall to 2-3.
Senior Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. got H-SC on the board first at 11:03 in the first quarter off a pass from Medwar. This started five straight goals for the Tigers. At 10:46, freshman Nick Morgan/Issaquah, Wash. scored his first goal of the season, unassisted. Senior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. continued the score run at 7:39 off an assist by classmate Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, N.C. Sophomore Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. (6:50) and Medwar rounded out the scoring stretch by the Tigers. Junior Reilly French/Frederick, Md. Assisted on Duffy's goal.
After Greensboro added two late, first quarter goals, H-SC extended their lead with seven unanswered goals in the second quarter. Hayden, off a pass from Patnesky scored at 12:15 to begin the barrage. Duffy scored at 7:45 while Medwar scored his third and fourth goals in man-up situations at 7:29 and 5:56. Hayden and French each assisted on Medwar's goals. Hayden scored at 2:48 off a pass from Patnesky while Duffy scored with less than three second left in the half to push the Tigers' lead to 12-2 at the break.
The Tigers scored one more goal at 14:11 with junior Palmer Jones/Chester taking a sophomore Logan Mitchell/Mt. Pleasant, S.C. pass and finding the back of the net. Greensboro scored the next three goals to pull within eight, with H-SC leading 13-5. French got the Tigers back on the scoreboard at 6:42 off a pass from sophomore Max Koontz/Winston-Salem, N.C. while freshman Jack Shipman/Mt. Pleasant, S.C. scored his first career goal off a Mitchell pass at 2:21 left in the period.
Both freshman Tommy Dyson/Alexandria and classmate Justin Lively/Charleston, S.C. each scored their first goals of the season at 13:35 and 12:03, respectively in the fourth quarter. Both goals were unassisted.
Senior Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. picked up his third win of the season playing in 27:12 minutes to start the contest. He faced only five shots, making three saves. Junior William Schlager/Washington, D.C. played through the end of the third quarter, making three saves. Sophomore Will Perry/Roanoke played the fourth quarter for the Tigers making seven saves in the final 15 minutes.
Junior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. won 12 of 13 faceoffs to start the game while also picking up a game-high 11 ground balls. The Tigers led in ground balls (53-32), clears (24-19), and faceoffs won (20-6).
H-SC returns to the road for its next four contests, starting with its' Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener at Shenandoah University on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. in Winchester.
