NEWBERRY, S.C. – Newberry College sophomore attack Scott Reed recorded a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists in Newberry's 20-8 win over Anderson on Wednesday night. Freshman goalie Griffen Broad saved the first two shots he faced on Anderson's opening possession. After a successful clear, freshman attack Baker Westmoreland took a pass from freshman midfielder Curtis Bukta and scored only 57 seconds into the game. Westmoreland's goal was the first of four Newberry goals scored within the opening 6:24 of play. Later in the first, Reed, senior midfielder Kyle Dunklee and sophomore midfielder Zachary Sunderland scored consecutive goals to give Newberry a 7-2 lead with 3:39 left in the period. The Trojans outscored the Wolves 4-1 to start the second and pulled within one, 8-7. Sunderland halted Anderson's scoring streak with his third goal of the game. Reed also completed his hat trick in the second, scoring two goals in the final 2:29 of the period, giving Newberry an 11-8 halftime lead. Newberry shut out the Trojans in the second half. Dunklee netted two goals in the final 30 of play to claim his fifth hat trick of the season. Junior attack Cole Bates also had two goals in the second half. Freshman midfielder Ethan Canning and freshman midfielder Sam Parent both achieved early career milestones, recording their first goals of their collegiate careers. Four different Newberry goalies played in the fourth quarter combining for six saves. Broad tallied two of his 13 saves in the fourth while freshman goalie Carter Hall made three saves and junior goalie Owen Latchford made one. Senior goalie Jahn Skinner-Ligon also appeared in net during the fourth. FAST FACTS Newberry scored 20 goals in a game for the first time since putting 24 up against Davis & Elkins on March 3, 2020, and tallied 20 or more scores for the third time in program history. The Wolves kept their opponent off the board for an entire half for the first time in program history. Dunklee's 45 points this season put him at fifth program in history for points in a single season. WHAT'S NEXT? The Wolves (5-5, 4-4 SAC) travel to Mars Hill (3-8, 1-7 SAC) on Saturday, April 10.
