Junior Cameron Marous (Brecksville) scored four goals for the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team, but it was not enough as it dropped a 12-10 decision season-opening contest against Elmhurst (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium. The Polar Bears fall to 0-1 while the Blue Jays improve to 1-0. Elmhurst got four goals from Ty Funderburk and three from Andrew Frerich in the win. After Elmhurst scored the game's first goal, Ohio Northern rattled off six straight goals. Senior Samuel Neff (Gainesville, Va./Trinity Christian), junior Kevin Giles (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill), senior Nicholas Groves (Fishers, Ind./Bishop Chatard), sophomore Joseph O'Connell, and Marous each scored before the end off the first quarter. Marous concluded the 6-0 run with another goal at the 12:50 mark of the second period. The Blue Jays responded with back-to-back goals to make the game 6-3 before senior Peter Hardt (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) scored with 7:33 to go in the half. Marous added two more goals for the Polar Bears in the next three minutes, giving ONU a 9-3 advantage at intermission. EC controlled play after halftime, netting the game's next nine goals, to take a 12-9 lead with 4:28 remaining in the game. A goal from senior Anthony Pavone (Bainbridge/Kenston) with 1:05 left gave the Polar Bears hope, but the Elmhurst defense forced a Northern turnover and two penalties in the final minute. Senior Mitch Groves (Fishers, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and sophomore Preston Victory (Brentwood, Tenn.) produced seven and five ground balls, respectively, en route to leading ONU to a 36-31 ground ball advantage. Victory was also 9-for-15 on face-offs as Northern was 16-for-26 on total face-offs. The Polar Bears were outshot 40-34 in the contest. Ohio Northern will return to the field Saturday at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) for 1 p.m. game.
