(Rotch Field) Date: Saturday, April 20, 2019 The Lead: With five seconds left in the first overtime period, freshman Skyler Celotto (Westport, Conn.) netted the game winner to lift the Emerson men's lacrosse team, 7-6, past Wheaton (Mass.) on senior day for the Lions' first ever NEWMAC win. Prior to today's contest, head coach Matt Colombini and the Lions honored its 2019 senior class of Jared Brush (Detroit, Mich.), Marshall Tate (Taunton, Mass.), Bailey Kennedy (Swampscott, Mass.) and Fernando Gutierrez (Lancaster, Penn.). INSIDE THE NUMBERS Celotto put in a game-high three goals with junior Austin Franklin (New Bedford, Mass.), sophomore Tim Doyle (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Hunter Gervais (Johnston, R.I.) each registering a goal and assist and Tate dished out one assist. Junior Austin DiPietro (Clermont, Fla.) scooped up seven ground balls with 11 wins in the face-off circle and freshman Lex Torrington (Culver City, Calif.) caused two turnovers. Freshman goalie Malcolm McGrath (Ridgefield, Conn.) picked up the win with 13 stops o 19 shot attempts and also had three ground ball pick ups. Pete Chisolm and CJ Leighton each found the back of the net two times alongside goals from Gil Bach and Matt Morgan. Troy Sliney, Sam Spaulding and Trey Kaufmann each scooped two ground balls and both James Marcucella and Nick Kinneston caused a pair of turnovers. In net for Wheaton was Chandler Miller, who shouldered the loss with 19 stops. Emerson held the advantage in the face-off X (13-4), shots (43-34) and ground balls (28-13) with 20-of -22 successful clears while capitalizing on one of its seven man up opportunities. Wheaton finished with a perfect 21-of-21 on clear attempts and could not take advantage in its two man up chances. HOW IT HAPPENED From the start, the game was a defensive battle and didn't have a goal scored until the 4:40 mark of the first quarter when Chisholm scored his first of two goals to give Wheaton the 1-0 lead. The second frame belong two the visitors as they tacked on four more goals from Bach, Leighton and Morgan to push the Lyons up to a 4-0 lead going into the half. Emerson came out in the third with a bang and slipped three goals past Miller, moving the Lions within a goal of Wheaton (4-3). Celotto put in an unassisted marker at 10:15 to start Emerson's scoring and took advantage of a hefty Wheaton penalty to tally his second goal less than a minute later at 9:41 (4-2). With 1:46 on the clock of the third, Franklin found space and rocketed a goal past Miller that inched Emerson within one entering the final 15 minutes. 36 seconds into the fourth was when Doyle fired in the equalizer (4-4) only to have Wheaton answer on the other end with Chisholm putting the Lyons back in front at 8:23 (5-4). Wheaton's lead was short lived for Brush took a feed from Doyle and found the back of the net to once again knot the score at 5-5 with 5:37 to go. Two and a half minutes later at the 3:07 mark, Emerson claimed its first lead of the game behind Gervais' marker (6-5) and were able to hold its advantage until Leighton tallied the tying 6-6 goal with 36 ticks left in regulation. Emerson won the regulation period's final face off, but were unable to put a goal in as the game entered overtime. Despite commanding possession within the opening minutes of overtime, Chisholm registered a shot that was saved by McGrath at 3:03 and had Bach's shot soar wide of the net at 1:16. Torrington hacked the stick of Berg for a crucial turnover that started what would become the game winning play and ended with Gervais finding Celotto in the middle, who slipped the goal past two defenders. UP NEXT Emerson gets back onto the field next Wednesday, April 24 when the Lions host Coast Guard at 7 p.m.
