Saturday marked the final game of the 2019 season for the men's lacrosse team which was also senior day for the team's ten seniors. The team took on Emerson College in NEWMAC play, which is also the Bucs final NEWMAC game as they will move to the Little East Conference (LEC) for the 2020 season and beyond. Going in winless in conference, the Buccaneers were able to beat the Lions, 14-7, to improve to 7-8 on the season, 1-6 in conference. For the Bucs, junior attacker Benjamin Avakian (Bourne, Mass) scored five goals, assisting on two others in the game while also picking up four ground balls. Senior captain Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass) scored three times and had one assist in the game. Freshman Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass) scored three times and had an assist while also picking up a team-high 11 ground balls. Defensively, senior Andrew Cook (Quincy, Mass) caused a game-high five turnover and picked up seven ground balls. Senior Brendan Kelley (Drexel Hill, Penn) caused four turnovers for Maritime. In goal, senior captain Michael Dolan (McLean, Va) made 10 saves and allowed seven Lion goals on 17 shots. Emerson senior Jared Brush (Detroit, Mich) scored three goals to lead the Lion attack. He also had an assist and picked up seven ground balls. Freshman Skyler Celotto (Westport, Conn) scored twice and had two assists in the game. Junior midfielder Austin DiPietro (Clermont, Fla) had an assist and picked up a game-high 14 ground balls for Emerson. Goalie Malcolm McGrath faced 30 Maritime shots, making 16 saves and allowing the 14 goals. Emerson scored first in this one, three minutes into the first quarter on Brush's first of the day. Maritime answered immediately on Avakian's first, just 15 seconds later. The teams went back and forth throughout the first quarter and finished the first tied at 3-3. Emerson scored first in the second to take a 4-3 lead but after that it was all Maritime as Avakian and company rattled off six unanswered goals before the end of the half, taking a 9-4 lead going in to the break. In the second half, the third quarter was low scoring in comparison to the first two quarters of play but, Maritime scored three times to extend their unanswered run to nine with goals from Avakian, Powers and Jones. At the end of three, the Bucs led 12-4. Emerson outscored the Bucs in the final quarter of play, 3-2, but, Jones' goal with under a minute to play in regulation doubled up the Lions, 14-7, which would be the final score.
