The Georgetown University women’s lacrosse squad never trailed in a 12-8 victory over the University of Delaware Blue Hens on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. The contest was the second in a six-game homestand for the Blue & Gray. With the victory, Georgetown improved to 4-1 on the season winning its last three. “With the quick turnaround, I was pleased we were able to come away with the victory,” said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. “We played solid on the defensive end of the field, but we need to clear the ball better so we aren’t forced to play defense for so long. It was an important game to win heading into a full week of practice.” Sophomore attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the way with a career-high five goals in the victory. Sophomore attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) tallied two assists apiece and junior attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) managed a goal and an assist. It was a total team victory as 10 different players scored a point for the Blue & Gray. The Hoyas outshot the Blue Hens, 29-20, and pulled in 14 draw controls while allowing Delaware just eight. Each squad committed 14 turnovers apiece. Junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) took the win in the cage with seven saves on the afternoon. The Hoyas got on the board in the first minute as sophomore midfielder Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) connected on a free position shot. Just a minute later, Blue Hen keeper Taylor Carpentier made a save, but her outlet passed was botched as Ryan picked it up and fired to give GU a 2-0 lead. Delaware answered, but Bruno came down and scored on a pass from Ryan to make it 3-1 just five minutes into the contest. A Delaware goal cut the Georgetown lead to one as the teams neared the midpoint of the half. But sophomore midfielder Liza Liotta (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) managed an unassisted tally to make it 4-2 in favor of the Blue & Gray. Freshman midfielder Mary Pagano (Short Hills, N.J./Pingry School) then added her first career goal and Bruno weaved through the crease on two separate occasions to make it 7-2 with 7:17 remaining in the half and capping a 4-0 run. The Blue Hens added two before the half to make it 7-4 with the Hoyas leading at the break. Delaware scored the first goal of the second half, but off of a draw, junior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) pulled the ball in and sped to the goal making it 8-5. The Blue Hens looked to gain momentum from a score, but Bruno notched her fourth of the contest on the assist from Ehle as GU held the comfortable 9-6 advantage. Junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) managed the tally at 14:05, and Bruno added her fifth of the game at 12:37 as the Hoyas were beginning to cruise. Delaware ended the 3-0 run with back-to-back scores to pull within three, 11-8. However, a goal from senior captain Sarah Cheney (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) in the final minute sealed the 12-8 victory for the Blue & Gray. The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts the No. 15/12 Penn at Cooper Field. The foundation is committed to finding a cure for brainstem tumors known as diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG). Nearly every day one child in the United States is diagnosed with DIPG and another child dies from it. The foundation seeks to make a difference and Defeat DIPG both by raising awareness of DIPG and by providing funding for research into effective treatments for DIPG.
