Senior captain John Burke/Richmond, junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. and freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. each posted two goals and two assists to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 17-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse victory past Ferrum College on Saturday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. had three goals and classmate Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. added one goal and one assist for the host Tigers (12-4, 7-2), who led 13-3 at halftime against the visiting Panthers (2-14, 1-8). H-SC scored the first four goals of the contest and never looked back, taking a 7-3 advantage after one quarter. Duffy (2g, 2a) and Medwar (3g) combined for the first four goals with Duffy tallying the first two at 14:10 and 11:10, followed by Medwar at 10:02 and 8:43. Burke (2g, 2a) scored at 7:09, before Hayden (2g, 2a) found the net twice at 6:24 and 5:05. Hayden provided the assist on the first goal of the game, while Duffy's second goal was unassisted. Sophomore Davis Hatch/Mechanicsville (1a) had the assist on Medwar's first goal, and O'Brien (1g, 1a) had the assist on the second goal by Medwar. Burke scored unassisted, before Duffy assisted on the first goal by Hayden, and Burke contributed the assist on Hayden's second goal. The Tigers outscored Ferrum 6-0 in the second quarter to lead 13-3 at the intermission. Scoring goals were sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. (1g) at 14:49, unassisted after winning the quarter-opening face-off, followed quickly by two more unassisted goals by Medwar and Burke, respectively, at 13:05 and 11:21. Adding goals were freshman Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. (1g) at 10:28, senior Seamus Byrne/Charlotte, N.C. (1g) at 3:22 and freshman Logan Mitchell/Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (1g) with 50-seconds left in the period. Assists went to Burke, sophomore Reilly French/Frederick. Md. (1a) and Duffy, respectively. H-SC took a 3-1 edge in the third quarter to lead 16-4 through 45 minutes. Goals were scored by junior George Marshall/Round Hill (1g) at 13:10, sophomore Harry D'Agostino/Massillon, Ohio (1g) at 12:20 and O'Brien at 5:01. The first two goals by Marshall and D'Agostino were unassisted, while Hayden aided O'Brien. The Panthers managed a 3-1 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to provide for the final 10-goal margin. Freshman Brooks Waskey/Roanoke (1g) scored with just four-seconds remaining, assisted by classmate Aidan Byrne/Charlotte, N.C. (1a) … as the Byrne brothers each posted points in the contest. Junior captain and goalie Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. started and played the first half (30:00), yielding three goals with one save. Senior Nick Steen/Purcellville played the third quarter (15:00), allowing one goal with three saves. Sophomore goalie William Schlager/Washington, D.C. played the fourth quarter (15:00), yielding three goals with three saves. Brummett was 13-15 on face-offs, and collected nine ground balls. Freshman Kevin Dunne/Mechanicsville was 7-8 on face-offs with six ground balls, and classmate Presley Miller/Annapolis, Md. was 3-3 on face-offs. Senior Anton Kheirani/Alexandria and sophomore Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, Md. each had two caused turnovers. It was Senior Day for long stick midfielder Lee Penninger/Stafford who was recognized for his many contributions throughout his collegiate career during a special pre-game ceremony at midfield. Lee was escorted by his parents, Ronnie and Marie, his sister, Rosalind, and his brothers, Forrest and Stuart. He is the president of the Society of Physics Students, and will graduate with a degree in physics and a minor in National Security. A proud four-year member of the Army ROTC program, Lee is set to commission in August of 2019. H-SC has a week off before closing the ODAC regular season on the road at the University of Lynchburg, ranked 20th in this week's USILA Division III Coaches Poll, on Saturday, April 27, at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg.
