On Sunday night, the Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team hosted Lyndon State at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The Stormy Petrels fought hard to remain within striking distance and trailed just 5-2 at halftime. Unfortunately, the visiting Hornets were able to extend their out to 9-3 just a few minutes into the fourth period and would cruise from there, securing a 10-5 win and dropping the Petrels to 0-3 on the young season. The Petrels held the Hornets to only one goal in the first period, and the score was 1-0 after 15 minutes of play. In the second, the Hornets were able to capitalize on a man-up opportunity to give them a 2-0 advantage. The Petrels would respond minutes later with a goal from sophomore attackman Braden Draucek with 10:53 left before halftime. The Hornets would answer just seconds later, putting the game at 3-1. The Petrels would reduce their deficit within seconds off a goal from junior attackman Nathaniel Gillespie at 9:51 in the second quarter. The Hornets would end the half with two more goals, pushing their lead out to 5-2. Lyndon State was the first team to score in the second half, but the Petrels would counter with a goal of their own from Draucek for his second of the game. The Hornets would end the third scoring two more times, extending their advantage to 8-3. The visitors began the final period with another goal, giving themselves a 9-3 advantage with 11:16 left to play. For the next 10 minutes of the game, the Petrels held the Hornets scoreless while also finding the back of the net twice. The first goal was from Gillespie for his second of the day, while freshman middie Dwayne Taylor scored off an extra-man opportunity on an assist by Gillespie with 1:57 left. It was too late, though, and Lyndon State would add a goal in the final minute. The Petrels were outstanding on faceoffs, winning 14 of 19 for the game. The Petrels defense locked down the Hornets extra-man offense by only allowing one goal during their four opportunities. The Petrels successfully cleared the ball on 13 of 17 attempts. Finally, the Petrels won the ground ball battle, coming away with 29 compared to 25 for the Hornets. Gillespie and Draucek both led their team with two goals each. Gillespie also recorded an assist and grabbed five ground balls. Sophomore attackman Cameron Ritter recorded a team-high seven ground balls. The Petrels will be back in action on March 7, as they will travel to Ohio over spring break. They'll take on Muskingum in New Concord on that day at 7 p.m., then continue to Cincinnati to face off against Mount St. Joseph on Friday, March 9, at 4 p.m.
