Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team dropped a tightly-contested non-conference game, 10-9, to Oswego State at Danzi Stadium on Wednesday evening. The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 1-2 overall on the year as the Lakers improve to 3-2. Sophomore Michael Carere powered the SJC offense with four goals on six shots. The midfielder also won six of 10 faceoffs and was credited with a game-best five ground balls. Junior Jack Gilbride pitched in with three goals on eight shots, and junior Kyle Strayer went for one goal, two assists, and two ground balls. Senior Andrew Brust (1-2) played all 60 minutes and made 13 saves. Oswego's Aiden Kenyon was credited with 10 saves. A back-and-forth affair from the jump, the contest yielded a 4-4 scoreline at halftime. SJC's four goals were split evenly between Gilbride and Carere. Carere put SJC ahead, 5-4, 1:38 into the third quarter, but two quick goals put the Lakers back ahead (6-5). Senior Tim McCann brought St. Joseph's back level (6-6) at 9:43, but it was Oswego that carried a lead into the final frame after a pair of goals inside the final five minutes of the third quarter (8-6). Strayer cut the lead to one goal (8-7) before Gilbride tied the game at eight at 11:35 of the fourth. St. Joseph's had two opportunities to pull ahead midway through the frame but hit the post both times. Oswego went on to make them pay, scoring goals at 3:38 and 2:36 (10-9). Carere's man-up tally with 1:31 to play in regulation gave the hosts a chance to tie the score again, but Oswego held them off for a 10-9 victory. The Lakers held a thin 12-11 advantage on faceoffs and outshot SJC 39-32 in the contest. Both teams were 1-for-2 in man-up situations. The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 19, when they visit Sage for a non-conference contest in Albany, NY at 4:00 pm.
