Jamie Ortega and Katie Hoeg posted eight points apiece as top-ranked North Carolina picked up a 20-8 victory over No. 7 Virginia on Friday afternoon at Dorrance Field. The Tar Heels won their 20th consecutive game, matching the longest streak in school history (17 in a row to end the 2016 season and three in a row to start 2017). Ortega finished with six goals and two assists, while Hoeg had four goals and four assists. Caitlyn Wurzburger posted season highs with four goals and five points. Tayler Warehime tallied three goals and an assist, and Kerrigan Miller dished out three assists. Ally Mastroianni scored a goal and controlled six draws, and Brooklyn Neumen had two assists. "We wanted to do a better job than we did offensively last weekend at Notre Dame with finishing the ball," head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "I thought our offensive unit did a really good job going in between the two different defenses they were throwing at us. Our spacing, our timing and our finishing were high-end, and we were patient on getting the shots we wanted to take rather than just taking shots." Leading 5-3 after a Virginia goal with 18:09 left in the opening half, the Tar Heels shut out the Cavaliers and closed the half on an 8-0 run to lead, 13-3, at the break. Hoeg (four goals, three assists), Ortega (four goals, two assists) and Warehime (three goals) led a dominant attack that scored on 13 of 19 first-half shots. Taylor Moreno (13-0) played the first 44:24 of the game in the cage and picked up the win, making four saves. Kimber Hower played the final 15:36 and made two saves while allowing two goals. UNC out-shot the Cavaliers, 31-24, scoring goals on 20 of 31 shots as a team. UVA held a 17-13 edge in draw controls, while Carolina had a 12-7 advantage in ground balls. Carolina will return to action by hosting Virginia again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill. Notes: • Carolina won its 20th consecutive game, matching the longest winning streak in school history (set in 2016 and '17). • UNC is off to a 13-0 start in 2021, the best start in school history (previous record was 11 in 2014). • UNC scored double-figure goals for the 29th game in a row. • Carolina's defense held Virginia to eight goals, the 12th time in 13 games this season the opponent scored single-digit goals. • Jamie Ortega extended her goals streak to 27 consecutive games and posted her 57th career multi-goal game (57 multi-goal efforts in 62 career games). It was Ortega's 25th career game with five or more goals and her seventh in 2021. • Ortega has tallied at least one point in 56 consecutive games and 61 of 62 in her career. • Katie Hoeg posted her 54th career multi-assist game and her 12th in 13 games in 2021. She is the ACC's career assist leader. • Taylor Moreno improved her career record in the cage to 42-5. She has started 46 consecutive games in goal.
