GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. scored a game-high four goals, adding one assist, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 19-6 men's lacrosse road victory at Greensboro College on Wednesday in North Carolina. Junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. added three goals and one assist, while senior captain John Burke/Richmond had two goals and one assist for the visiting Tigers (2-0), who led 9-2 at halftime. Davis Miller scored two goals and two assist for the host Pride (0-1) in the non-conference contest.
H-SC took a 7-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter, getting two quick goals each from Duffy and Burke. Duffy got it started at 12:50, assisted by Hayden, before Burke followed with goals at 7:54 and 6:47, the first assisted by sophomore Reilly French/Frederick, Md. while the latter was unassisted. Sophomore Davis Hatch/Mechanicsville scored unassisted at 4:49 for the Tigers, and Duffy scored again, unassisted, at 2:06. Freshman Hunter Harrington/Virginia Beach scored at :57, assisted by junior George Marshall/Round Hill, and Hayden scored at the buzzer, assisted by Duffy.
H-SC and GC each scored two goals in the second quarter to provide for a 9-2 margin at the intermission. Junior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, N.C. and Duffy each tallied unassisted goals for the Tigers at 12:10 and 11:39, respectively.
H-SC took a 7-1 advantage in the third quarter to extend its margin to 16-3. Spotting GC the first goal of the quarter, the Tigers scored seven unanswered goals … getting them from Hayden at 13:07, sophomore Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. with back-to-back unassisted goals at 13:04 and 12:36, Duffy at 12:21, Hayden at 8:34, along with freshmen Max Koontz/Winston-Salem, N.C. at 4:08 and Drane Garven/Concord, N.C. at :11, respectively, both unassisted. Hayden's goal was assisted by Hatch and Duffy's by Burke.
H-SC and GC each scored three goals in the fourth quarter toward the final 13-goal margin of victory for the Tigers. Freshman Aidan Byrne/Charlotte, N.C. scored at 13:07, followed by Koontz again at 9:12 and senior Seamus Byrne/Charlotte, N.C. scored the final goal for the visitors with 4:12 remaining. Aidan Byrne's goal was assisted by Garven, Koontz scored unassisted and Seamus Byrne's goal was assisted by freshman Brooks Waskey/Roanoke.
Junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. started and played the first half, yielding two goals in 30 minutes while making two saves. Sophomore William Schlager/Washington, D.C. played the third quarter, allowing one goal with two saves, while senior Nick Steen/Purcellville played the fourth quarter, allowing three goals with five saves. H-SC won 16-27 face-offs, including sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. (6-10), freshman Presley Miller/Annapolis, Md. (5-6), freshman Kevin Dunne/Mechanicsville (4-9) and sophomore Michael Thornton/Farmville (1-2).
H-SC took a 53-25 advantage in shots, including 34-15 in shots on-goal, with Burke and Hayden each posting seven shots, and Duffy adding six shots … each of the three with four shots on-goal. The Tigers had 33-26 edge in ground balls along with 13 caused turnovers.
H-SC will remain on the road to play at non-conference opponent Catholic University on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
