The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 22-7 victory over Greensboro College Saturday afternoon in the team's season opener. With the result, the Marlins improve to 1-0 while the Pride drop to 0-2. It took no time at all for the scoring to start as Nathan Sheirburn won the opening faceoff, took the ball down the field and ripped a shot that bypassed the Pride goalie. Greensboro answered right back with two of their own though, putting the home side in a 2-1 hole after five minutes of play. The Marlin offense got down to business after that though, scoring seven of the next eight goals, including a pair from Greg Gaetano and from Brady Morrison. In the second, the team fed off of that spurt as they cashed in five more goals while only allowing a single one for the Pride. Going into halftime, the Marlins would be up 13-4. Momentum never slowed down for VWU coming out of the locker room as the team continued to excel in the offensive zone. Another five goals would be added in the third quarter and four in the fourth. At the game's conclusion, 12 different Marlins got on the score sheet, including four from Sheirburn and four from Gaetano. Jason Thibeault and Austin Sax would go for three while Brady Morrison both cashed in two. Jon Onia, Cole Maguire, Thomas Potter, Dante Castillo, Joey Rayman and Ethan Arterowould all finish the day with one goal. In his first game as a Marlin, Kyle Leeming played exceptional as he allowed just seven goals while picking up 12 saves. He would be relieved in the final nine minutes by Philip Venanzi who held the Pride scoreless while registering four saves. Men's lacrosse will be back in action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the squad takes on Methodist University on the road.
