GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team opened its 2019 home schedule Tuesday afternoon by rolling to a 16-2 win over Mount Union in non-conference play at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City (1-1) led 4-1 after one quarter then broke open the game with a seven-goal barrage in the second period. Junior attack Henry Brannan (Tampa, Fla./Plant) paced Grove City by firing in six goals while freshmen Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina) both scored three times. Freshman Addison Bennett (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield), freshman Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair), sophomore Andrew Kvasnovsky (York, Pa./Dallastown) and freshman Josh Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) all added goals. Evans and freshman Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) both assisted two goals each. Bennett, Brannan, Gladstone, Kvasnovsky, Speers, Spicher, freshman Jack Atwood (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and junior David Calhoun (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) all had one assist each. Brannan scored twice in the first quarter to help Grove City jump out to a 3-0 lead. He added three more goals in the second quarter while Gladstone and Speers each scored a pair in the period to help the Wolverines take an 11-2 lead by halftime. Brannan, Kvasnovsky, Evans and Spicher all scored in the third quarter while Bennett closed the scoring with 5:58 left. Evans picked up a game-high 13 ground balls. He also won 12 of 14 faceoffs. Speers had five ground balls and Bennett picked up four ground balls. Gladstone and senior defender Jesse Shaffer (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) both caused three turnovers. Grove City outshot Mount Union (1-2) by a 39-25 margin, including a 27-6 edge in the first half. Grove City had 28 turnovers and Mount Union turned over the ball 26 times. In goal, freshman Robbie Voinchet (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) earned his first win after stopping nine shots. Grove City will visit Ferrum at 7 p.m. Saturday night in non-conference action.
