Senior Timothy Yannucci (Coram, N.Y.) and Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, N.Y.) each scored three goals and the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team held on to defeat United State Merchant Marine Academy, 14-11 at The Westside Athletic Complex on a windy Saturday afternoon. Freshmen Keith Ditta (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Matt Peters (West Haven, Conn.) added a pair of goals each as the Colonials improved to 5-1 on the season. Stephen Cicchetti (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), Ryan Reuling (Groton, Conn.), Ryan Hirt (West Islip, N.Y.) and Billy Youngblood (Warwick Valley, N.Y.) each registered one marker to close out the scoring for the winners. Junior keeper Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, N.Y.) faced 39 shots from the Mariners and turned away 13 of them to earn the victory in goal for WestConn. Leading the offense for USMMA was Liam Connors, who had four goals and a pair of assists for six total points. Tristan Kelehan and Carter Hall added three and two goals, respectively for the 0-2 Mariners while Jackson Misner and Michael Carbone each tallied one goal. Brendan Kean suffered the loss between the pipes, but finished with 19 saves and withstood 51 shots on Saturday. After Ditta put the Colonials up 1-0 with just 1:31 elapsed in the contest, USMMA rattled off three of the game's next four goals to take a 3-2 advantage. Kelehan netted the final two goals during that stretch. Youngblood, Hirt and Caldwell scored consecutive goals during a 1:46 stretch in the opening period to put the hosts up, 6-3, and they never looked back. After falling behind, 14-9 on Caldwell's final goal of the afternoon, Connors made it interesting midway through the final stanza, scoring a pair of unassisted goals 48 seconds apart. WestConn next takes on Wooster College in Balmora Resort, Fla. on Sunday, March 15. Face-off is slated for 12 noon. The Mariners kick off a two-game southern swing against Skidmore on Tuesday, March 10 in Virginia Beach, Va. at 11:30 am.
