BALTIMORE, MD -- The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team used a three-goal run to turn a one-goal lead late in the third quarter into a four-goal margin that visiting Ohio State never sliced to less than two as the Blue Jays topped the Buckeyes, 13-10, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win, which was secured when sophomore attackman Cole Williams scored into an open net with 26 seconds remaining, is the seventh straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. Ohio State dropped its fifth straight and slips to 5-6 overall and 0- 2 in the Big Ten. The Blue Jays led just 8-7 as the clocked ticked under 70 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but a rebound goal from senior Brinton Valis and a high-to-high Kyle Marr snipe off the ensuring faceoff gave the Blue Jays a 10-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. The margin was 11-7 at the 11:27 mark of the final period when sophomore Williams finished a transition opportunity off a slick feed from Shack Stanwick and the Blue Jays still led by four at 12-8 after Ohio State's Jack Jasinski and the Blue Jays' Alex Concannon traded unassisted goals midway through the period. That margin held until the Buckeyes made one final push with back-to-back goals in a 25-second span to slice the 12-8 deficit to 12-10. Ryan Terefenko dodged hard to the middle of the field and scored in traffic and Tre Leclair ripped a shot inside the near post off a dodge from a similar spot to goalie Brock Turnbaugh's left just 25 ticks later. The Buckeyes, who won all seven faceoffs in the fourth quarter, had two more offensive-zone possessions down the stretch, but LeClair's pass to the crease was intercepted by Turnbaugh and Turnbaugh kicked aside a JT Bugliosi shot with 1:20 remaining; Williams scored his empty net goal just under a minute later to seal the victory. The first 30 minutes of the game solved nothing as the teams hit halftime tied at 5-5. The Blue Jays led 3-1 and 5-3, but the Buckeyes held them off the board for the final 9:55 of the first half and goal back-to-back goals from Omari DeBerry and Jackson Reid in the final three minutes to account for the halftime tie. Like it did in the first half, Hopkins scored three of the first four goals of the second half with Williams, freshman Luke Shilling (EMO) and Valis all striking in the first 8:02 of the third quarter to make it 8-6; the Buckeyes managed only a man-down goal from Austin Seiple in that time. Shilling's goal was the first of his career. It took Ohio State just 41 seconds to answer the first of Valis's two goals as Leclair bull-dodged from the top and went high to low under pressure to make it 8-7. Valis added his rebound goal just over five minutes later and Ohio State was never closer than two in the final 16 minutes. Williams matched his career high with four goals, while Stanwick (1g, 3a), Joel Tinney (1g, 2a), Valis (2g) and Marr (2g) also had multi-point games for the Blue Jays. Turnbaugh totaled 11 saves in goal for Johns Hopkins, including fourth in the pivotal fourth quarter. Leclaire had a team-high three goals for Ohio State, which also got two goals and one assist from Reid. The Buckeyes also got a strong performance from faceoff specialist Justin Inacio, who won 19-of-27 and grabbed a game-high eight ground balls. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, April 14 when the Blue Jays travel to Penn State. Faceoff is set for 2 pm with a live national television audience on ESPNU. Notes: Stanwick extended his point-scoring streak to 58 games and also passed Dave Marr (1993-96) on Johns Hopkins' career scoring list -- he now has 195 points; he also passed Mickey Webster (1957-59) on JHU's career assist list as he now has 106. Hopkins has scored at least eight goals in the second half of each of its seven consecutive victories. The seven-game winning streak is the longest for Johns Hopkins since the Blue Jays won seven in a row in 2015.
