Sophomore Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. scored a game-high five goals, adding one assist, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a season-opening 14-7 lacrosse victory past the University of Mary Washington on Saturday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
Senior captain John Burke/Richmond added four goals and an assist for the host Tigers (1-0), who led 7-2 at halftime. Chris White scored three goals for the visiting Eagles (0-1) in the non-conference contest.
H-SC jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter, scoring five unanswered goals after UMW opened the scoring. Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. scored the first goal of the campaign for the Tigers, unassisted at 11:56. Burke and O'Brien followed with two goals each in the opening quarter as both of Burke's goals were unassisted at 11:09 and 10:17, with O'Brien scoring at 11:00 and 1:18, assisted by Medwar and Burke, respectively.
H-SC tallied two of the three goals scored in the second quarter to lead 7-2 at the intermission. Burke scored his third goal at 8:38, assisted by sophomore Davis Hatch/Mechanicsville. Junior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, N.C. scored his first goal of the season at 6:41, assisted by freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa.
H-SC and UMW each scored four goals in the third quarter as the hosts led 11-6 after 45 minutes of action. O'Brien added his third goal at 11:51, assisted by freshman Presley Miller/Annapolis.
Duffy earned his first goal of the season at 9:36, unassisted, while Medwar added his second goal at 2:56, assisted by O'Brien. Burke contributed his fourth goal at 1:32, once-again unassisted, to close out the quarter's scoring.
H-SC posted three of the four goals scored in the fourth quarter to provide for the final seven-goal margin of victory. Hatch scored his first goal of the spring at 11:15, assisted by Duffy, while O'Brien closed out the scoring for the hosts with his fourth and fifth goals at 4:33 and 2:00, respectively, the final tally assisted by junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C.
Junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. played the duration, yielding just seven goals in 60 minutes while making 16 saves (69.6%). Sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. was strong in the X, winning 16 of 25 face-offs (64.0%) for the Tigers, adding a game-high 13 ground balls as H-SC took a 36-33 advantage.
H-SC took a 49-34 advantage in shots, including 26-23 in shots on-goal, with O'Brien posting 10 shots (6), Hatch adding eight shots (3) and Burke had six shots (5). The Tigers had 13 caused turnovers, led by sophomore Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, Md. with four.
H-SC will play on the road at non-conference opponent Greensboro College on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. in North Carolina.
