Catholic University men's lacrosse junior Alex Mulyk made 16 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, but Hampden-Sydney scored eight of the game's final 10 goals en route to a 9-8 overtime win Tuesday at Cardinal Stadium. Catholic (1-2) jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the half, outscoring Hampden-Sydney 5-0 in the second quarter. Freshman Joey Rockovich scored both of his goals in the second while junior Mark Tocchio and freshman Nick Fanelli each had a goal and an assist. Freshman Cameron Dunn also netted his first career goal. The Tigers (3-0), who are receiving votes in this week's USILA Division III Coaches Poll, scored the first two goals of the second half just 34 seconds apart before junior Vince Catenacci, the Cardinals' leading scorer, scored his eighth goal of the season of an assist from Rockovich on the man-advantage with 12:49 remaining in the third quarter. Hampden-Sydney scored the last four goals of the quarter, including three in the final 1:27, to tie the game at 7-7. The Tigers then took their first lead of the game just 2:16 into the final period, but Catenacci added his second tally with 10:18 to play to tie the game at 8-8. Neither team could net the game-winner over the final 10 minutes as the two goalies combined for seven saves, four of which came from Mulyk. Tocchio also hit the post with 2:21 left while a shot by Hampden-Sydney's Jake O'Brien sailed high over the cross bar from five yards out as time expired. The Tigers had the opening possession in overtime, but Sean Duffy's shot was blocked by freshman Brendan Dulin and senior Luke Scaduto picked up the ground ball to give the Cardinals a shot at a game-winner. However, Catenacci's shot was also blocked and the Tigers scored the game-winning goal in transition with O'Brien scoring his team-leading ninth goal of the season off a feed from Jared Medwar. Four of the last five games between the two teams have been decided by two goals or less. Catholic also outshot its opponent for the second time in three games this season, but have lost both games. Rockovich finished three points to lead five Cardinals with at least two points. Mulyk's 16 saves were three shy of his career high set at Hampden-Sydney a year ago on Feb. 21, 2018. In three career games against the Tigers, he has totaled 49 saves, including his top two performances in 2018 and 2019. Catholic returns to action this Saturday when it welcomes Arcadia for a nonconference contest beginning at 1 p.m.
