The Maritime men's lacrosse team scored the final three goals to pick up the win, 7-6, over the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field. The Privateers improve to 3-0 this season and it is their first 3-0 start since 2008. Maritime was led by sophomore Danny Connell (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) who had a team-high three points on the day, scoring a game-high two goals. Seniors Nick Pellegrino (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), T.J. Ragusa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and freshman Matt DeMeo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) each had two points, with one goal and one assist apiece. Junior midfielder Michael Petty (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and freshman midfielder Brett Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) each added one goal apiece for the Privateers. Sophomore defender Patrick McAllister (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and freshman midfielder Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) both anchored the Privateer defense with three caused turnovers apiece. Nine other players tallied one caused turnover for the afternoon. Freshman midfielder Joey Manno (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) led Maritime in ground balls as he scooped up seven for the game as he went 11-for-16 on the draw. Connell, Petty, sophomore Mark Buchner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), junior Ian Ziemski (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and senior John Piscitello Jr. (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) all contributed to the possession game with four ground balls apiece. In goal senior Brendan McNally (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) stopped 11 shots on target while yielding six goals to Mass. Maritime. McNally also had two ground balls in the win. Just over one minute into the game, the Buccaneers scored to go up 1-0. The Privateers responded with six minutes left in the first quarter, Trodden scored to even the game at one. Mass. Maritime netted the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter. With 11:31 remaining in the first half, Connell scored again to cut the lead to one. Mass. Maritime scored a few minutes later at the 5:47 mark to make the score 4-2. Maritime answered 35 seconds later with a goal by DeMeo. Pellegrino added another goal at the 2:36 mark to even the score up at two going into the halftime break. After halftime Mass. Maritime came out aggressive scoring 73 seconds in to take back the lead. At the 10:05 mark, the Buccaneers extended their lead to two, going up 6-4. Connell scored his third goal with 6:36 left in the third cutting the lead to one. With 1:14 left Ragusa scored to tie the game up at six. Maritime took the lead back after Petty scored with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter, making the score 7-6. Both teams had attempts in the fourth quarter but could not convert any. The Privateers used their strong defensive effort to hold the Buccaneers scoreless the entire fourth quarter and preserve their 7-6 lead. Maritime (3-0) will return to action on Wednesday evening as the team visits Western Connecticut for a 5 p.m. start at the Western Athletic Complex. Mass. Maritime (0-1) will return to play against Plymouth State for its next contest. The game will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
