The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior day with a 20-10 victory over Hampden-Sydney Saturday night on Shellenberger Field. The Hornets close out the regular season with an overall 12-5 record, finishing second in the conference. Junior midfielder Kevin Rogers (Leesburg, Va) lead the Hornets with an impressive five goals, one assist, and two ground balls. Senior attack Andrew Thomas (Roswell, Ga.) made most of his senior day with three goals and three ground balls. Senior midfielder Nick Willertz (Severn, Md.) earned two unassisted goals and senior attack Logan Adams (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) collected one goal and three assists. Patrick Cornelius (Potomac, Md.) had a strong presence in the net picking up six ground balls and racking up five saves. HOW IT HAPPENED Lynchburg started the game fired up and ready to play. Rogers got the Hornets on the board early in the first quarter with two unassisted goals. He was followed by fellow Hornets Tye Mitchell (Woodbine, Md.) and Willertz who also scored two unassisted goals each. By the end of the first quarter Lynchburg already had a 7-1 lead over Hampden-Sydney. The Hornets kept the pressure on Hampden-Sydney in the second quarter. Thomas helped extend the lead with back to back goals and an assist from Adams. Rogers ended the half with a last second goal assisted by Adams and brought the score 12-4 Lynchburg. Hampden-Sydney had several man up advantages in the third quarter, but Lynchburg defense managed to shut them down and totalled 11 ground balls. The Hornets racked up five more goals from Brooks Poli (Downingtown, Pa.), senior Evam Lombardo (Franklin Park, N.J.) assisted by Jack Speers (Glenview, Ill.), Josiah Martin (Lynchburg, Va.) assisted by Adams, and Colin Dean (Havre de Grace, Md.) assied by Kyle Lewis (Suwanee, Ga.). Lynchburg finished the game 20-10 with a final goal by freshman Nate Shafer (Easton, Md.) assisted by Brett Rogers (Leesburg, Va.).
