Maggie Diebold and Courtney Burke scored four goals apiece on Monday as the Central Michigan lacrosse team defeated Detroit, 20-7, in a Mid-American Conference game at Titan Field. It was the CMU's third decisive victory in a row as improved to 9-6, 7-2 MAC. The Titans are 2-7 both overall and in the league. Natalie Karlen, the Chippewas' leading scorer and the top scorer in the MAC, had three goals while drawing the attention of the Detroit Mercy defense. She finished with a season-high five assists. "Credit to Nat for still having an outstanding game," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "We showed that when you try and take one piece away that does not really work; all of our players can score. Shoutout to all of the kids who were able to get one in the back of the net today, and for getting us to that victory." CMU sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Savage broke the program single-season record for ground balls, bringing her season total to 57 in the game. The record was previously held by Logan Halvorson in the 2019 season with 55. Nine Chippewas scored and CMU tied the program record with 14 assists. CMU had 14 in a win at Delaware State on April 21, 2017. Tyra Prince added three goals and Hannah Potter had two for CMU. Avery Wagnon, Brianna Hart, Audrey Whiteside and Brennan Paddy also scored. Amanda Hilderbrandt had four assists. Savage protected the goal for the Chippewas for 42 minutes before turning it over to Erin Owens. Savage had six saves; Owens had one. Central Michigan finished with a 21-8 edge in draw controls, a telling statistic, Tisdale said. "Brennan Paddy had 11 draw controls, Bri Hart had six," she said. "Those are all a real result from Maggie Diebold and Elise Marshall being able to get the job done on the draw and gain us possession." The Chippewas will close out their season with Senior Day at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex on Saturday May 8 (1 p.m.) against Youngstown State. "This team is really special, and we know that it is time to show that and close the season out on a high note," Tisdale said.
