UMBC (8-3) dug out of an early 7-1 hole and tied the game twice in the fourth quarter, but the fourth-seeded UAlbany Great Danes (8-4) scored a pair of late goals and defeated the top-seeded Retrievers, 14-12, in the America East semi-finals. Junior midfielder Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) and sophomore linemate Nick Dupuis (Alexandria, Va.) led the spirited UMBC rally with career highs. Galloway tallied a career-best five goals, while Dupuis' 4-goal, 3-assist effort also set a new personal mark. The Great Danes led, 11-7, late in the third quarter, but Galloway triggered a 4-0 UMBC surge by converting a cross field Dupuis pass with 17 seconds to play in the frame. The third member of the first midfield, junior Taylor Bohanan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's), scored just before the shot clock expired 1:59 into the fourth quarter to slice the deficit to 11-9. Less than two minutes later, junior attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tallied the lone goal by a UMBC attackman to draw the hosts to within 11-10. UMBC knotted the game at 11-all as Dupuis 73 seconds later netted his 23rd of the campaign on a skip pass from Patschorke. The teams exchanged scores and Galloway drilled home his 24th of the campaign with 6:02 to play to even the count at 12-12. After losing the ensuing draw, UMBC possessed the ball twice, but committed turnovers on both occasions. The second miscue, a failed clear, led to Albany's game-winning goal as Corey Yunker scored from the edge of the crease with 2:27 remaining. UMBC would not get another possession as Albany added an insurance goal with 1:13 remaining. Shots were even at 37-all, but UAlbany won the face-off battle, 18-11, including taking 13-of-16 in the second half. Retriever senior goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) made eight saves in 60 minutes of action. Two of the Retrievers' three setbacks this year came at the hands of the Great Danes. The Great Danes took a 4-1 lead just 6:33 into the game and extended it to 7-1 four minutes later. UMBC senior LSDM Colin Kasner (Crofton, Md./DeMatha) and Galloway brought the Retrievers back to 7-3, scoring in the final 64 seconds of the first quarter. UMBC throttled UAlbany in the second quarter and cut the deficit to 7-5 at intermission. Back-to-back Dupuis' goals early in the third trimmed the deficit to 8-7 before a 3-0 UAlbany response over a span of 70 seconds gave the visitors a four-goal cushion.
