The Vassar College men's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit, powered by seven different goals scorers, for an 18-7 win over Maritime College on Wednesday evening at Weinberg Turf Field. The Brewers are now 3-2 on the season, while the Privateers slip to 3-2 overall. Maritime opened the games scoring with three tallies in the first three minutes of the opening quarter. Pacing the effort was two goals from junior midfielder Connor Flannery (Shoreham, NY) and three assists by senior attack Danny Connell (Seaford, NY). The Brewers broke onto the scoreboard at 9:34 with a historic goal from senior attack Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) as it marked his 16th goal of the season and the 100th tally of his career. Mullen is now just the second Vassar men's lacrosse player to reach 100 career goals as he sits behind Noah Parson '16, who amassed 127 in his career. Following the first score of the game for sophomore middie Logan Hyde (Manhasset, NY), Vassar saw junior attacker Tomás Meade (Corvallis, OR) fire in three straight goals to end the first and open the second, giving the Brewers a 5-3 advantage. It was a lead that the home team would not relinquish as a pair of goals from junior attack Spencer Duryee (Whitehouse Station, NY) widened the edge to 7-4 to end the first half of action. Hyde kicked off the third quarter in fine fashion for the Brewers, notching three of the next five goals during a scoring streak to help push the margin to 12-4. Senior attack Kyle Cherry (Manhasset, NY) and classmate Nick Diamond (Boca Raton, FL) also tallied during the span. The Privateers gained one back with 17 seconds remaining in the third as junior attacker Matt DeMeo (Sayville, NY) scored his third of the contest for a 12-5 score. In the final quarter, the Brewers once again went on a streak, opening with four straight goals, including two more from Hyde, the fourth of the game from Meade and the second by Diamond to open up a 16-5 margin with 8:41 to play. Maritime battled back as junior midfielder Bryan Keegan (Lake Grove, NY) scored on the man-up off an assist from Connell, but back-to-back goals, including the first of his career from rookie attack Maximus Albanese (West Islip, NY) pushed the score to a 12 goal margin (18-6) that Maritime could not recover. Vassar, which finished with a 35-26 advantage in shots, saw Hyde record a game-best six goals, adding two caused turnovers. Meade finished with four goals, an assist and a ground ball, while sophomore middie Connor Deehan (Westwood, MA) recorded four assists. Cherry and Mullen each finished with a goal and an assist, as Diamond posted two goals and a helper. Defensively, sophomore long stick midfielder Calvin Trebing (Nesconset, NY) had five ground balls, two caused turnovers and went 9-26 on the face-off. Sophomore Devin Lee (Clinton, NY) notched seven saves in 55:35 of action, while rookie Jack Bagin (Glen Ridge, NJ) did not have any saves in 4:25 of relief. For Maritime, DeMeo led the way with four goals, adding two ground balls and a caused turnover. Connell recorded a game-best five assists, while junior midfielder Kevin Buser (Babylon, NY) had a game-high seven ground balls, while going 18-28 on the face-off. In goal, junior Kyle Bockelman (Melville, NY) made four saves over 45:00 of action. Rookie James Walsh (Mahopac, NY) played 10:56 of relief, while junior Nick Pasco (Sterling, VA) played the final 4:04 - neither had any saves. Vassar is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Clarkson University in Liberty League play at 1pm on Weinberg Turf. Maritime is also in action Saturday, hosting Geneseo at 12pm.
