Battling yet another nationally-ranked squad, the Springfield College men's lacrosse team was upended by 11th-ranked Union, 14-9, on Saturday afternoon in their home opener on Stagg Field. The Dutchmen improved to 3-1 on the year, while the Pride slipped to 0-4. For the game, Union held a 43-34 edge in shots and went 17-for-27 from the face-off "X", and held Springfield to just 1-for-6 on man-up opportunites. Zac Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) paced the Pride's offense with three assists and a goal and Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) found the back of the cage twice out of the midfield. Dan Biesty (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) turned in a 14-save performance, 12 of which came in the opening 30 minutes of play. Union's Kerry Lyne netted five goals to lead the visitors and Eric Zimm contributed two assists and a goal. Graham Goldheim was credited with 12 saves in the win, and Patrick Regan won 15 face-offs and picked up a game-high seven ground balls. Springfield got off to a fantastic start and raced out to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game as Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Patrick Watson (Franklin, Mass.) registered unassisted markers before Chris Santa Barbara (Hillsborough, N.J.) took a feed from Tommy Nash (Massapequa, N.Y.) for the Pride's third goal at 10:40. However, Union would respond with the game's next three goals to even the contest up with 9:58 left in the second quarter. Springfield scored for the first time in over 22 minutes when Alek Turi (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished a great look by Hawley, and the scoring would then heat up, as the teams combined for four goals in the final 1:14. Union pumped in a pair of goals in the final 27 seconds to take a 6-5 advantage into the halftime break. The Pride would battle their way to tie the game up at 7-7 with 4:14 remaining in the third on a transition goal that brough the crowd to their feet as Connor Roberts (Somers, Conn.) connected with fellow defensemen Kyle Bazonski (Dalton, Mass.) on the run. However, Union would take the lead for good on a strike by Brian Davis just over a minute later. Springfield would pull within 9-8 when Tierney found the back of the cage just over two minutes into the final quarter, only to have the Dutchmen string together four-straight goals to open up a 13-8 cushion, which ultimately led to the 14-9 triumph. Springfield will not play again until March 15 when it takes on Endicott in Florida.
