Syracuse midfielder Jamie Trimboli scored the game-winning goal with 1:14 left in the fourth period to lift the 13th-ranked Orange to a 15-14 triumph over No. 3 Duke in ACC men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Syracuse improves to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in league action while the Blue Devils fall to 8-2 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. The Orange scored three of the game’s final four goals to come away with the win. “Offensively, we kind of thought the game was lost in the first quarter,” said head coach John Danowski. “We turned the ball over quite a bit and I don’t think we had a lot of confidence then going forward. I don’t think our guys thought they could play with Syracuse.” Junior midfielder Brad Smith paced the Blue Devils with three goals and two assists for five points, while rookie attackman Joe Robertson also had three goals. The Orange trailed, 13-11, with less than five minutes remaining in the contest before three straight tallies – including two from Brendan Bomberry – gave the visitors a 14-13 lead with 2:37 on the clock. A scramble at midfield on the ensuing faceoff led to a transition opportunity for Syracuse, but Duke goalkeeper Danny Fowler stymied Bomberry on the doorstep, and the Blue Devils countered with a goal by Robertson at the 2:11 mark to knot the game at 14-14. After Syracuse won the next draw, Trimboli scooped up a loose ball in the offensive end and beat Fowler for the game winner. “We were disappointed in the fourth quarter. To have a two-goal lead at home with nine minutes to go it’s disappointing to give that up. We had opportunities to get possessions off the draw and we weren’t ready to make those plays. And Syracuse made those plays. Fowler, after making just four saves in the opening half, was outstanding in the final two quarters with nine stops to finish with 13. Dom Madonna also was credited with 13 stops. Despite Duke securing 11-of-15 faceoffs in the opening half, the Orange and Blue Devils were deadlocked at 7-7 at intermission. Syracuse had seven different goal-scorers in the first half while Duke received two goals each from Joey Manown and Brad Smith. The Orange scored the first three goals of the third quarter for a 10-7 lead, but Duke responded with a 6-1 run to claim its 13-11 advantage on Smith’s marker with 9:07 left in the fourth period. The Blue Devils had five different goal scorers during the run and five of the six tallies were assisted. Joe Stein was strong at the X for Duke, winning 20-of-32 faceoffs. Syracuse ran four different draw men out against Stein and controlled the fourth quarter by winning 5-of-7 restarts. For the Orange, Bomberry registered four goals while Stephen Rehfuss contributed two goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Dom Madonna carded 13 saves. Duke remains at home to entertain North Carolina on Friday, March 30. Faceoff is set for 5 p.m., and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
