Stevenson men's lacrosse senior Ethan Christensen scored the game-tying goal with 2:00 remaining in regulation but 15th-ranked Ursinus scored a man-up goal with 12 seconds left to lift the hosts over the 20th-ranked Mustangs in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field. The Mustangs (0-1) scored on the game's opening possession as sophomore Josh Brannan found the back of the net on the first shot of the day. Sophomore Cam Leydig had the assist. Junior Jacob Tatum made it, 2-0, in favor of the visitors, scoring his first goal of the season at the 10:03 mark. Trailing, 3-1, the Bears (1-0) went on a 4-1 run to end the first quarter with a, 5-4, lead. Christensen scored unassisted while Tatum netted his second on an assist from sophomore Ryan Coleman. Ursinus scored twice in the opening 5:19 of the quarter to push the hosts lead to, 7-4. Stevenson responded with three straight goals to tie the game, including back-to-back man-up goals. The Bears sent two players to the box as the Mustangs took advantage, scoring twice in a 34-second span, on goals by sophomores Connor Nelson and Shane Ford. Bobby McClure had a goal and an assist for the hosts in the final two minutes to give Ursinus a two-goal advantage. Tatum closed the half with his third goal of the day, scoring with 30 seconds remaining to get the Mustangs within one at the break. Both teams scored twice in the third quarter with both going scoreless on their lone man-up possession. The Mustangs outshot Ursinus, 11-9, in the frame with junior Will Smith netted his second goal of the game. Tatum scored his fourth goal of the game, including the third unassisted tally. At the 11:36 mark, the Bears pushed their lead to, 12-10, scoring on their first man-up goal of the game. Stevenson scored twice, with goals by Brannan and Christensen to tie the game with 2:00 remaining in regulation. The Mustangs won the ensuing face-off but immediately turnovered the ball over. Down the other end, senior Marc Poust made a save but Stevenson once again turned the ball over in the midfield before committing a slashing penalty with 27 seconds remaining. The Bears converted on the man-up opportunity, scoring the game-winning goal with 12 seconds left. Ursinus outshot Stevenson, 43-39, including 13-10 in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs won 17 of the 28 face-offs, including all nine in the second quarter. Junior Shiloh Shassian went 16-for-27 at the dot. Stevenson, who has dropped back-to-back season openers to Ursinus, fall to 11-5 in season openers under head coach Paul Cantabene. With five points on the afternoon, including a game-high four goals, Tatum pushes his point streak to 31 games. Brannan finished with a pair of goals and has three multi-goal games in his last four dating back to last season. Coleman dished out a career-high three assists, his third career multi-assist game. Poust finished with 10 saves, his fifth career game with at least 10 saves. Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 22 when the Mustangs travel to face No. 7 York (Pa.) in non-conference action beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs host No. 10 Gettysburg in their home opener on Saturday, February 29 beginning at 7:00 p.m
