Tied 9-9 late in the third quarter, the third-seeded Bulldogs scored seven of the final eight goals of the game as the top-seeded #18 Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse squad fell to Bryant, 16-10, in the Northeast Conference Championship title game on Sweeney Field on Saturday afternoon. For their performances in the two-game postseason tournament, Saint Joseph's senior midfielder Evan Campbell (3g, 6a), senior attackman Matt Tufano (4g, 4a), and junior close defenseman Logan Blondell (3gb, 3ct) were named to the 2021 NEC Championship All-Tournament Team. Junior attackman Ryan Doran (3g) and junior midfielder Levi Anderson (1g, 2a) led the Hawks with three points apiece on Saturday. Campbell and junior midfielder Tucker Brown hit the back of the net twice each while senior attackman Matt Tufano (1g, 1a), sophomore attackman Matt Bohmer (1g), and sophomore attackman Mac McLaughlin (1a) rounded out SJU's offense. Sophomore close defenseman Patrick Clemens scrapped for a career-high seven ground balls while, in their final collegiate appearances, graduate student close defenseman Tyler Makar and graduate student long stick midfielder Liam Hare registered a team-high two caused turnovers apiece. Senior goalkeeper Tucker Almany (9-1) made 11 saves vs. 15 goals allowed in all but 78 seconds in net. How It Happened • Saint Joseph's (9-4) built a 3-1 edge late in the opening quarter as Brown (13:54), Campbell (9:40), and Doran (5:20) put away unassisted scores for the Crimson and Gray. However, Bryant's Aidan Goltz (:32) and Logan McGovern (:01) scored back-to-back goals in the final moments of the first to tie it up, 3-3. • Bryant (9-3) tacked on two more to open the second quarter (14:51, 13:08) before the Hawks closed out the half with three consecutive goals from Anderson (5:56), Brown (3:48, assisted by Anderson), and Doran (2:43) to take a one-goal lead, 6-5, into the halftime break. • The Bulldogs scored the opening goal of the second half (3Q, 13:06) to tie it up, 6-6, but Campbell (12:11) and Tufano (7:56, assisted by McLaughlin) gave the Crimson and Gray another two-goal advantage halfway through the third. • Bryant's Marc O'Rourke then scored back-to-back goals (7:42, 4:19) and assisted on Trevor Weingarten's second goal of the game (2:22), but Tufano found Doran with 1:06 to play in the third to even out the score once more, 9-9. • Bryant's Jacob Alexander won the ensuing face-off (1:06) and scored four seconds later to give the Bulldogs a one-goal edge heading into the fourth, and the visitors ripped off four consecutive goals - three unassisted and one on an EMO - as the 5-0 run put them ahead by five, 14-9, through the 7:45 mark of the fourth; during that opening 7:15 of the fourth quarter, Bryant fired off seven shots - four for goals - and held the Hawks without a shot. • Bohmer scored his first of the day on a feed from Anderson with 3:36 remaining in regulation, but Bryant hit the back of the net twice in the final 1:33 to come away with the 16-10 win. Behind the Box Score • Shots (49-47 in favor of SJU) and shots on goal (28-27 in favor of SJU) were close throughout the contest, while Bryant held a 45-31 advantage in ground balls, with 12 coming from Alexander. • Junior face-off specialist Zach Cole won 13 opportunities from the X to go with six ground balls.
