The Kenyon College Lords cracked open the 2019 lacrosse season Saturday with a lopsided 21-5 home victory over the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents. It was the Lords' sixth straight season-opening win, as well as their 12th straight victory over the Presidents, dating back to the 2002 season. Kenyon spotted Washington and Jefferson the first goal of the game and then returned fire with ten straight tallies. In that run, which spanned about 15 minutes, sophomore Matt Pollack scored three times, while seniors Nick Vitale and Emilio Sosa each scored twice. Three of those 10 Lords' goals occurred while they were in man-up situations. The Presidents then ended Kenyon's run with a goal at the 7:45 mark of the second quarter. They scored once more before the half, making Kenyon's advantage 10-3 at the break. The second half brought more of the same, as Kenyon dominated all facets of the game. The Lords outshot the Presidents, 64-14, and controlled the faceoff square, winning 23 times in 28 attempts. Additionally, the Kenyon defense won the ground ball battle, 52-21, and coaxed the Presidents into 28 turnovers and a dozen failed clears. The Lords outscored the Presidents 7-1 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 17-4. Three of those seven goals were netted by Vitale, who finished the game with five goals, two assists and seven points. Pollack scored again in the third and wound up with four goals, two assists and six points. Joe Bolea registered a man-down goal to start the fourth and the Lords later tacked on another man-up goal, making them 4-for-9 with the extra player on the field. In all, ten different players scored at least once for Kenyon. Sophomore Will Harrigan ended up with three scores and both Sosa and Sam Humphrey wound up with two. Sophomore David Metzger played the entire 60 minutes in front of the Kenyon net and made five saves.
