Seniors PJ Rafferty and Dylan Brasch combined for 17 points to lead the Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team to its third win in four games, a 16-7 triumph over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University. Rafferty, the program's all-time leader in points scored, etched his name into the program's record book again with a single-game best 10 points this afternoon on four goals and six assists. For Brasch, his seven points on four goals and three helpers was a career-high, as he and Rafferty hooked up for five tallies. It was the senior duo that got the Aggies (3-3) on the board just 2:22 into regulation, and less than 30 seconds later Ben Napieralski made it a 2-0 game. The Griffins (3-3) countered with the next two scores, but DelVal got both back in the final two minutes of the first stanza to regain the two-goal lead going into the second. Brasch and Rafferty took over in the second quarter as they combined for three goals in the first 4:51 of the stanza to extend the lead to 7-2. Brasch had three goals and two assists and Rafferty had two goals and two helpers in the second stanza alone to help the Aggies to a commanding 10-3 lead at the break. Out of the half, Gwynedd Mercy made it a 10-5 game with two goals in the first 5:39 of play including a man-up tally from Jacob Dzierzgowski. Once again, DelVal was able to answer with a pair of goals separated by just 47 seconds to make it a 12-5 game going into the final 15 minutes. Matt Waibel and Napieralski picked up the goals and Rafferty added another helper. Rafferty dished out three more assists to start the fourth quarter and open up a 15-5 lead for the home squad. Long pole sophomore Nick Bogdan was the recipient of the first helper for his first career tally and Brandon Keller scored on a man-up advantage. After the Griffins scored two goals late in the game, Tony Aguayo found a loose ball in front of the cage and deposited it for his first career goal and the 16-7 final. Rafferty's six assists ties the program's single-game record with Jordan Smith who reached the mark a season ago. Napieralski finished with three goals and Keller had two. Nic Brown got the start in goal and made 17 saves with six goals against in 53:12 of work. Freshman Aidan Purcell played the final 6:48 and made two saves on three shots. Defensively, Michael Florig and Kevin Bailey each had three caused turnovers and Sean Mylod scooped six ground balls. As a team, DelVal was 16-for-18 on clear attempts and 2-for-4 on extra man opportunities. They held the Griffins to 7-of-12 clears and forced 18 turnovers. Gwynedd Mercy was led by Dzierzgowski's three goals on 17 shot attempts and Ryan Gartenmayer followed with two. Joey Giordano won 12-of-18 faceoffs and Chase McFeeley suffered the loss with 10 goals against as he played just the first half.
