Sophomore midfielder Tyler Humphrey (Andover, N.J./Pope John XXIII) netted the game-winner with 3:33 left and a stingy defensive front lifted the Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team to the home-and season-opening win Saturday afternoon. Susquehanna (1-0) picked up a 9-8 non-conference win over the Lycoming College Warriors (0-1). Susquehanna 9, Lycoming 8 How It Happened It was a game of runs and Susquehanna came out on top with the last three goals of the game to erase an 8-6 deficit. Lycoming and the River Hawks were tied 1-1 after one period of play as the Warriors struck first at 9:21 and then junior midfielder Kyle Watts (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) scored the equalizer at 6:59. SU outscored the Warriors, 4-2, in the second quarter as four different River Hawks found the back of the net. Back-to-back goals in the final 1:50 of the half from sophomore attackman Colton Dick (Owings, Md./Northern) and Watts sent the River Hawks into halftime with a 5-3 advantage. The third frame belonged to Lycoming, who put up three to Susquehanna's one tally. Andrew Ream paced the 3-0 run with a man-down goal and an assist to bring a 6-6 stalemate into the fourth. The Warriors staked a two-goal lead in the first three minutes of the last stanza as Dominick Massaro and Ream each scored their second of the day. A failed Lycoming clear set up Watts' third goal of the afternoon at 10:01 to cut the deficit to one. Dick's second of the day evened up the score at 8-8 five minutes later following another failed Warrior clear. Less than two minutes later, Humphrey would strike with his first-ever collegiate goal and it proved to be the difference as the River Hawks stepped up the defense, coming away with two caused turnovers on four Lycoming turnovers. Inside the Box Score Susquehanna outshot the Warriors, 45-24, and edged the visitors, 37-36, in ground balls. Lycoming controlled face-offs, winning 16-of-20, but struggled to take care of the ball as the Warriors finished with 31 turnovers. Both teams did well in shutting down extra-man opportunities as Lycoming scored once in four tries while the River Hawks went 1-of-6. Top Performers Watts tallied his first career hat trick as he paced SU with three goals while Dick finished with two goals and an assist.
