In front of a record crowd of 5,048, No. 16 Rutgers (6-2) defeated No. 12 Syracuse (3-3) by a score of 14-10 on Sunday afternoon. Rutgers senior attackman Jules Heningburg tied his career-highs with six goals and eight points to spark RU to a victory. "We got back to the basics of taking care of ourselves and playing to our strengths, both offensively and defensively," Rutgers head coach Brian Brecht said. "It's a big win for our alumni, a big win for our program over one of the most tradition rich programs in our sport, and to be able to do this at home in front of our fans. I thought the offense really grew up today to help us win a big game. This is great momentum heading into the second half of the season with one last non-conference game left before Big Ten play." Christian Mazzone also added three goals, while Casey Rose scored twice. Max Edelmann made 10 saves in the win. Rutgers led 39-29 in shots, 34-21 in ground balls, and was 15-of-17 on clears. Alex Schoen was 12-of-23 on faceoffs. Syracuse entered the day ninth in the nation in turnovers at 11.2 per game, and RU forced them into 22 turnovers. Rutgers trailed 8-7 with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter. The Scarlet Knights rattled off the next seven goals from there, holding the Orange scoreless for over 16 minutes to ice the win. "This is a big time win for our program," Heningburg said. "It gives us lots of momentum. It means a lot to all of the guys in the locker room. We came out today and executed. We need to take this forward now and get the next one." The game went back-and-forth in the first half. Syracuse took early leads of 3-1 and 4-2, but the home team continued to rally back. Four straight goals for RU have the team its first lead at 5-4, but Cuse scored the final goal of the opening half for a 5-5 deadlock at halftime. In the third quarter, RU and SU exchanged goals, with RU midfielders Casey Rose and freshman Ryan Gallagher scoring, and the game was even at 7-7. The visitors scored next for an 8-7 lead, but it would be their last lead of the day, as the home team stormed back with the next seven goals. Just 20 seconds after that Cuse lead, Heningburg scored to even the game at 8-8. He would score four of the next five goals for RU, who lead 10-8 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Mazzone and freshman Tommy Coyne tallied to give Rutgers its biggest lead of the day at 14-8 with six minutes remaining. Syracuse added two late goals, but couldn't cut further into the deficit as Rutgers locked up its 14-10 win. "We were able to put together a really solid game on both sides of the ball," senior captain Michael Rexrode said. "This is a game you always dream about playing in. We had this one circled on the calendar before the season, just an awesome opportunity. You could definitely feel the energy in the locker room before the game. That really carried through to the game. This meant a lot to us, and was a huge win." The Scarlet Knights are in the midst of a four-game homestand. Next up is a contest with Delaware next Saturday at 7 p.m. "I thought our composure was a big difference today," Brecht said. "We played with a lot of conviction and passion. Our guys were prepared and ready to play in a big game. It's nice to play a full sixty minutes, both offensively and defensively, and get a big win at home in front of our friends, family, administration and fans here at Rutgers." Postgame Notes This was the first win over Syracuse since 2004, and RU's 10th win in 51 lifetime meetings.
