For the first time since 2017, the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team knocked off a ranked opponent, taking down No. 15 Dickinson, 16-12, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 2-1, while the Red Devils fall to 2-1. The last time an Elizabethtown men's lacrosse team beat a ranked opponent was April 18, 2017 when the Blue Jays topped Washington Lee, 11-7. Elizabethtown also avenged a 20-3 loss to Dickinson last season. Senior Scott Nizolak tied a program record with six assists, while sophomore Owen Yake tallied six points on four goals and two assists. Senior Mike Scrafano matched Yake with four goals of his own, while classmate Mike DiGenova registered three goals of his own. Senior Ben Levin paced the Dickinson offense, tallying five points with four goals and one assists. Freshman Skyler Schluter dished out a team-high four assists and freshman Griffin Moore recorded three goals. Elizabethtown came out firing in the opening two minutes, scoring two goals for the early 2-0 lead. Nizolak had the first goal, followed by Yake seven seconds late. The Red Devils closed within one at 2-1 and 3-2 in the first quarter, but the Blue Jays stretched the advantage back to two with a tally from Scrafano with 1:56 remaining in the opening stanza. The second quarter turned into a defensive battle, with the score remaining tied for most of the period at 4-4 and then 5-5. Elizabethtown senior goalie Tom Mahoney racked up five saves in the quarter as the two teams went into the locker room knotted at five. Tied at six in the third quarter, the Blue Jays surged ahead with a 3-0 run capped off by a man-up goal from Yake with 2:49 on the clock making the score 9-6 in favor of the home team. After the Red Devils closed within two to start the fourth, Elizabethtown used its second 3-0 run of the period to push its advantage to five (13-8) with just under 10 minutes left in the game. Dickinson attempted to rally, scoring the next three goal and closing within two (13-11), but the Blue Jays locked down the victory, firing home three of the final four goals of the game to take the 16-12 win. Sophomore Danny Gilbert was dominant at the face-off X, winning 19-28 (67.8%) and picked up seven ground balls. Senior Griffin Liebsch registered a team-high two caused turnovers. Mahoney (2-1) came one save short of his season-high, stopping 15 shots on 49 shots. Senior Cole Pellicano (2-1) nearly played the entire game in goal for the visitors, racking up 13 saves on 44 shots. The Blue Jays wrap up their four game home stand to start the season on Saturday, Feb. 29, against Stockton. Opening face-off is set for 3 p.m.
