Freshman Cameron Walker scored the game-winning goal 27 seconds into overtime as the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team defeated Catholic University, 12-11, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles, who have advanced to overtime in four of their first seven games, improve to 4-3. After Catholic gained the upperhand early on in shots, the Eagles were quick to respond on the scoreboard, connecting on the first three scores of the game. Senior Shane McKenzie started the scoring, netting an unassisted goal at 9:41, and Josh Schulman scored on a Kieran Burns assist one minute later. Bryant Baus followed at 6:37 on a McKenzie assist. Catholic responded with two goals late in the period to pull to within 3-2. In the second, the Eagles netted three straight to open a 6-2 advantage. Senior Chris White opened the period scoring on a McKenzie assist at 11:40, and senior Cole Hogan added another off a McKenzie assist less than a minute later. Junior Chase Kapuscienski added to the run with a score at 7:46 left. The Cardinals reeled off four straight goals to knot the score just before halftime. The Eagles edged ahead in the third, as Hogan scored on a Quentin Ricci assist just 10 seconds into play. The Cardinals knotted the score midway through the period, but the Eagles scored the next three goals to take a 10-7 advantage. Hogan scored on a Kaleb Hunter feed at 7:20, and Schulman scored on a McKenzie pass at 4:42. Baus capped the run with a goal assisted by J.C. Reynolds with 3:44 left in the third. The Cardinals drew to within 10-8 entering the fourth. Schulman opened the fourth with his third score of the day with McKenzie picking up another assist at 11:14. The Cards then would knot the score, as they cut into the deficit with 5:43 left to draw to within 11-9, and drew to within one with 3:27 to play. Catholic gained the tying score with 3:02 left, and neither team would score in the remainder of regulation. The Eagles started the extra period with an extra man advantage, and Walker scored 27 second in, on a McKenzie assist. Catholic led in shots, 46-38, while the Eagles led in faceoffs (15-11), and ground balls, 32-29. Ricci led with six ground balls for UMW. Senior goalie Billy Senicola made 17 stops for the Eagles. UMW will be back in action on Wedenesday when they host Illinois Wesleyan University at 4 p.m.
