The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell to St. Mary's College of Maryland, 12-10, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. UMW slips to 7-8 overall, and 1-3 in the conference. In the early going, St. Mary's got the scoring started as they scored just 2:08 into the game. Logan Green then got the Eagles on the board just a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. The Seahawks answered back with another goal to take a 2-1 advantage on a man-up opportunity with 4:09 to play in the quarter. Cole Hogan then put one in the back of the net with 1:40 left and added another goal just eight-seconds later at Quintin Ricci won the face-off and hit Hogan to put UMW up 3-2. Vinny Smiroldo added to the Eagles' lead as he scored just 1:06 into the second quarter to put the score at 4-2. The Seahawks then went on a mini-run as they killed off a three minute penalty and then scored three goals to take a 5-4 lead with 5:51. Josh Schulman tied the game at five as he scored 1:03 later. St. Mary's scored two goals before the end of the half to take a 7-5 lead. In the second half, the Eagles' offense was kept in check as they could not put a goal in the back of the net. The Seahawks took advantage as they scored three goals and went up 10-5. Chris White got the Eagles on the board in the fourth quarter as he scored on an assist from Shane McKenzie with 11:42 to play. St. Mary's answered back with a quick goal to put them back up five, 11-6. White then scored another goal, this time on an assist from Sean Tuite, to put the Eagles down just four with 8:33 to play. UMW then went on an offensive tear as Robert Tata scored on an assist from Bennett Miller with 6:18 left. Just six-seconds later, Eli Ayer won the face-off and dished out an assist to White to put the score at 11-9. Then less than 30 seconds later, Hogan scored off an assist from Schulman to pull UMW within just one goal. The Eagles had some chances near the end of the game but came up just short and the Seahawks added another goal with 3:23 to play to win the game 12-10. Ayer won 15-18 face-offs and picked up 11 ground balls, while Ricci won 6-7 face-offs. Sam Pugliese had two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Billy Senicola and Lucas Whittie combined to make 14 total saves. The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to #3 York for a game at 1 p.m.
