The Marymount University men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with a big second half to improve its Atlantic East Conference record to 4-1, taking an 18-8 victory over Neumann University at Long Bridge Park on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore attackman Clark Akers had a big day for the Saints, scoring six goals and dishing out four assists for a game-high 10 points; in the effort, he set the men's lacrosse program single-season record for points, bringing his season total to 66 points. The previous record was 61 by Stephen Milano in 2001. After two goals by the Knights in the first-three minutes of the first quarter, senior Matthew Ebert got the Saints on the board. Akers tallied his first-two goals of the game on assists from senior Sean Friedman and Ebert to give the Saints a 3-2 lead, but a late Neumann goal sent the teams into the quarter break at a, 3-3, tie. Sophomore Nicholas Kinstler scored, as the team's traded goals to open the second-quarter scoring, before a three-goal Saints' run took a 7-4 lead. Akers had a hand in all three, first assisting freshman Troy Tangolics at the 4:54 mark. Just over a minute later, Akers netted his third on an assist from junior Michael Burns. Only seven seconds after that, freshman Hunter Ralston took a pass from Akers and sent a shot through the keeper's legs from the ground on an acrobatic finish. The Knights' Colin Blake netted the last-two goals of the half, as the Saints took a 7-6 led into halftime. The Saints led in shots, 27-13, at the break, while converting on all nine clear attempts. Marymount pulled away in the third quarter, tallying eight goals, while the Saint defense clamped down to hold the Knights' scoreless in the quarter. Freshman Riley Scales got things going with two goals only 17 seconds apart in the first two and a half minutes of the quarter. Burns then found the cage, before Akers notched two straight to push the lead to 12-6. Ralston scored two in the run as well, sandwiching a goal by Friedman to cap the run and give Marymount a 15-6 lead heading into the final frame. The teams played a scoreless quarter for almost nine minutes to open the fourth, before Akers scored his sixth on an assist from Scales. The teams traded goals over the final five minutes, with sophomores Jonah Mackiewicz and Matthew Wendell adding the Saints' final goals. The score was the first of Wendell's career. The Saints' defense was led by senior Hunter McGeeney and sophomore Cole Kocovsky with two caused turnovers, each. Senior Grey Clarkson was a brick wall all game for the Saints, making 12 saves in over 54 minutes in the cage, including multiple saves with Knights' right on the crease. Classmate Patrick Ruleman played the final 5:29 of the game, making three saves. The Saints will close out their regular season schedule on Wednesday, April 17 in an Atlantic East matchup at Cabrini University; the opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
